I've been on the trip advisor forum a lot lately (excited, moi?), and judging by recent comments there is a big shift towards bringing back the peso and phasing out the dollar. Recent posts say that Mexican airports are no longer accepting USD for the departure tax, and while you get about 12 or 13 pesos to the dollar, if you pay in USD they convert at a rate of 10, so of you're planning to spend a lot of cash you'll lose out a fair bit.

We took both but we didnt leave the hotel once! so the only time we used money was in the gift shop for mosquito repellent (take LOADS)- we paid in Dollars and got Peso's back..our departure taxc was paid for with Kuoni so I cant comment on that.

    We tipped in both.

I am soooo Jel. Mexico is amazing i loved it.

We took one of those travel agent credit cards & loaded it with dollars - most cash machines accept them as do shops etc. Was handy & you can check your balance etc like a 'normal' card. Think you have to pre-order them.

We also took £200 in peso for tipping & departure tax - think it was equivalent to £30 or £40 each.

The refusal to accept USD for departure tax has only happened in the last few weeks. Strangely enough, they will take GBP, Euros, and most other currencies if need be...but they are making an actual concious effort to phase out the USD - at the airports at least.

We took both but found we used pesos more. On our welcome meeting with the rep, he explained that the country was trying to do away with the dollar due to drug laundering and we did find him to be right. He explained that if we tipped the hotal staff in dollars they likely wouldn't be able to spend it in "real" mexico outsude of the hotel industry as the country is trying to phase it out so we didnt use it for tips after that.

Both are accepted pretty much everywhere but they encourage you to take pasos. We took all pasos as instructed by Thomson but when we drew money out from our hotel it gave us dollars! I would take pasos though as they're trying to phase out the dollar.
