Forum censorship

ForTheLoveOfMrsBrown, 30 June, 2011 at 10:30 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 65

Note: I am aiming to debate a general issue of what people think should be allowed/not allowed on an internet forum, with no reference to any specific forum, nor with specific examples.

I think censorship is necessary on an open internet forum. Nobody would sanction the use of racist terms (to take what would usually be deemed the "ultimate" taboo), so there are notional lines that we recognise should never be crossed. Should we expect every forum user to have the same notional lines? When can we demand that "our" line demarking offensive/not offensive is the right one? Does an open forum simply have to cater for the wishes (and notional lines) of the majority?

Some censorship is need, agreed. But not to the level that H have taken it over the last couple of weeks. Not when the mods are deleting threads because people are being over sensitive.

Agreed that some level of cencorship is needed. A forum is a place for fun and chit chat, so we should be allowed to have a bit of banter. It crosses the line when someone says 'you are a f*****g c*w, b***h, s**t, etc, etc, as then it is personal. I think abuse directed at a specific person should be removed by the mods, but general ranting and banter should be allowed to stay.

Can anyone objectively say that someone is being over-sensitive - who knows how they really feel?

Every public forum I've ever joined has had precisely this problem. I've taken to looking at it as their attempt to preserve a good business image - the forums are, after all, part of a larger business venture which depends on a reputation for being friendly etc. Annoying as it is for all the Ackshual Real People who use it, the mods will always play it safe and obliterate any content that might make them look bad. It's the same with the parenting forum I use. The ole'skool regs of that place barely post there now and just use facebook or private spin-off forums instead.

Let's face it, at least you can swear on a private forum!

I think that's a slightly unjustified comment regarding the other side. The sheer amount of double posters suggests that there are lots of forums that people are happy to post on.

However, is it you who makes the door policy? Smiley smile

Go on, enlighten me. My thread deletion rate has risen lately so could do with that kind of insider knowledge.

The biggest problem I have is the lack of consistency in the deletion of threads. The one asking why a thread was deleted was deleted. That's just stupid and doesn't form part of 'the rules' that aj is so keen for us to adhere to.

It's ridiculous when you have people throwing a strop because there happens to be a 'Trickers and Claire fat fighters thread' which they didn't like as it is 'too cliquey' as their names were in the title. How stupid!

The thread is being censored as it's being written.

Moderation is fine, and to be expected on any public forum, what's less acceptable is a hiding of anything that is not pretty. A pretence that things are other than what they are.

When that happens, at it appears to be from all the complaints I've been hearing recently, all that is left is the gloss, and ultimately it's a very fake and unsatisfactory situation.

    Ah, I see.

Any other stories from the annuls of Hitched 'The Black Years'* you fancy sharing before HQ explodes in apoplectic rage?

*Not racist, but pull it for that reason if you really must.

Please Please Please do not swear in the forum.

There are search tools that look for certain words and if found then recommend that site be tagged as an adult site. If this happens to hitched then it will impact how/when we are displayed in search engines. This would of course have a negative impact on our business

    Thanks

Finally some sort of response form the Hitched Mods. I have left you some feedback in the feedback forum, please take it on board and respond - I think we all deserve an answer.

You need to find a better way of filtering them then Smiley winking

Seriously, if a search tool can find it, but your filtering tool can't, you need a better one.

I am a website administrator and forum moderator somewhere else - it's not an easy job. I have a set of rules to follow, but still have to use my judgement. I don't delete much - rules say open discussion is OK, but public attacks are out, and yes there's a line I have to draw at times. But the law on libel means sometimes moderators have to be a little stricter than may be absolutely necessary for damage limitation.

But I don't have to worry about rude words - I have no swear filter to deal with!!

    Hear hear!

Consider this a form of revolt. If you weren't unfairly censoring perfectly legitimate posts, we wouldn't be trying to get around your swearing filters and thus jeopardising hitched's online presence.

I completely understand this point, it's just the shame that the mods don't.
