Foundation & makeup

LallyHay, 24 February, 2011 at 19:39 Posted on Planning 0 27

Just wondering how you have all chosen your make up for the wedding day? Anyone got any favourite foundations which would give a good (but natural looking) coverage to bad skin...and that would last all day? Don't think I can afford a make up artist for the day so going to buy some nice brand makeups - but not sure what to choose (I've always just used Collection 2000/Maybelline/Rimmel all my life).

Thanks

It depends on your skin. Your best bet is probably to go get a couple of trials done at somewhere like Debenhams/House of Fraser and see what looks good on you.

I had my make-up trial last weekend and the girl used Laura Mercier primer and foundation and it felt lovely on my skin. Pricey though

    Hi

I really do recommend Laura Mercier Creme smooth foundation. Its fantastic. As you can use as little or much as you like and its natural looking and long lasting.

Also Chanel Vita Lumiere foundation. That has been my favourite for a long time. For a more matt foundation use Pro Lumiere also from Chanel.

I love Benefit make-up. But it just depends on what suits your skin so go to a dept store and get made over to see what you like. They will teach you how to do your make up too.

L'Oreal Infallible wears exremely well - lasts all day, good coverage, doesn't look cakey. But it's important to get the right shade, so I'd suggest you talk to a make-up counter at a department store or Boots, and try some.

Consider Smashbox photofinish. it is a matifying primer, that stops your shin from shining and reflecting the camera flash

I've tried loads of foundations over the years and I always come back to Chanel. It's good coverage, doesn't 'flashback' in pictures and looks natural. If you want quite a bit of coverage I would recommend Chanel Mat Lumiere. If your skin isn't too oily, then try Chanel Pro Lumiere which is the one I use most. Vita Lumiere is nice, but if you have the slightest bit of oil on your skin it will slip right off so I wouldn't recommend that unless you have dry skin.

For primers I like Makeup Forever HD primer or Laura Mercier. I find that Chanel bases work better without primers though, just make sure you set them well with a good powder like Mac blot powder. You should be able to pick up samples of all three Chanel foundations from the counter so that you can try yourself.

I am still on the hunt for the right products - so far I've tried Dior, Clinique, Jane Iredale (mineral make up) and No7 - the best so far has been the Dior for me but still not found the perfect one - the next on my hit list is MAC.

Just a hint though, if you suffer from bad skin (mine is awful - I get spots when I stress, and seem to stress all the time at the moment!) and my make up lady said that when I do have a trial, if I have primer, don't keep it on all day as although it will cover the spots it will also block the skin and you could risk a break out before the big day.

Totally echo what Rochelle said about Chanel bases. They do work best on bare skin. When I use them I set them with Makeup Forever Mist and Fix. This really sets the makeup and makes it sweatproof and waterproof. Juliet

I had a bridal make up lesson at bobbi brown counter in a dept store last week, I wasnt convinced as I usually dont like my make up when other people have done it but my mum wanted to take me, and they did a brialliant job, really listened to what I wanted and I loved what they did, you get 2 sessions for £30 but then if you but any products they ae redeemable against that so essentially u just pay for the product!

I never ever wear foundation, only one nights out - but I had a make up trial done in Debenhams and I love bare minerals... it lasts ages, gives the perfect natural finish and their primer is fab too! xx

I'm currently "road testing" foundations for my wedding. I bought a MAC one this week and it certainly has staying power but is perhaps a bit thick for my liking and not quite the perfect colour. However, today I have mixed it half and half with my Maybelline (everyday foundation) and it seems to have done the trick. Will see how long it lasts.

I have combinaiton skin tending more towards dryness.

I have tried No7 primer and its just awful... it doesnt go on smoothly at all...

I also struggle to get a nice foundation as I regularly go on the sunbed so would need a "darker" foundation but not too dark that I look orange or indeed Al Jolson lol...

I'm a little bit stuck as I'm getting married abroad. I use loreal true match as it gives good coverage but my eyelashes are so straight I just can't get them to curl for more than 10 mins, worried about loading on too much mascara in the heat so been thinking about getting fake eyelashes but natural looking ones - just need volume and curl on the day rather than clumpy lashes iykwim?

Has anyone tried any natural looking fake lashes that last all day? Would love to hear about them x

I've tried so many different expensive foundations over the years (YSL, Chanel, Dior, Clinique etc) but my favourite by a long way is good old Maybelline Dream Satin Liquid. It's not expensive at all so may be worth a try!!! I always buy the right shade for my skin and another bottle 2 shades darker and that way you can mix it yourself to get the closest match for your skin if you have tanned or spraytanned etc.

I've yet to try Mac or Benefit foundations though so cannot comment on them.

Aw thanks :-) I'll look into those, see if a salon nearby does them - I'm rubbish at fiddling around with fake lashes. ONly prob is that we get married a week after we arrive, not sure if they can withstand the pool and jet ski's! Maybe worth a trial beforehand (ready for my sisters wedding in March) and see how long they last! x

I also am a serial foundation buyer - finally found a Clinique one I really like and it's been discontinued [:'(]

I think on the recommendations here (and a few others on make up sites) I'l going to try Chanel Mat Lumiere. I have a tester of Pro Lumiere at home which came in a magazine, will try that first and then go try and get a tester of Mat Lumiere.

Concealer is next on the list...thinking I'll go for Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, tried so many others and they don't cover my dark undereye shadows.

I had a trial at Estee Lauder in Debenhams and loved their make-up, so have bought the products their make-up consultant used on me. The trial was free as well so no strings attached (surprised Bobbi Brown make you pay?!).

I have oily/combination skin and bought their Doublewear Light foundation, which I'm really really impressed with. It is light and allowed my skin to 'breathe' but gave really good coverage and does not rub off or lose its effectiveness - I kept it on for about 8 hours and saw no loss of coverage.

So would def recommend going to Estee Lauder for a consultation - not cheap but definitely good! (I am typically a Maybelline/Max Factor/Body Shop bod so this was my 'splash out' on make-up!).

My cousin had those eye lashes that are meant to last a month - they started falling out a week after her wedding taking her eyelashes with it! She ended up having to wear the Girls Aloud falsies until her lashes grew back.

I swear by this concealer for every day use:

    http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/product_range/product_range_13706.htm

You have to top up during the day so I doubt it would be suitable for the whole wedding though.

Their day and night creams are really good as well and cost about £2 each.

I think I'm being airbrushed for the wedding. My friend has the kit in her salon so I'm gonna have a practice run first. If not then I'll probably raid her mac stuff!
