Foundation - Recommend me yours (x-posted)

ooh la la, 19 May, 2009 at 09:55 Posted on Planning 0 30

Hi ladies,

I'm looking to buy a new foundation and will pay up to £20 for one, as I don't often wear it (only special events).

Or, should I buy a cheaper tinted moisturiser, which I could wear everyday? If so, which would you recommend?

I have blonde hair, and blue eyes, but am not sure what kind of skin tone I have.

I'd love to hide/get rid of the horrible discolouration that I have around my mouth (not sure why I have this.)

I'm not sure if I have "combination skin"? I have very dry cheeks (just on the cheekbones), a dry chin and nose and a slightly oily forehead.

This is me...

At the moment I use a Maybelline Mousse, which is awful, as it dries my cheeks out even more and is too pale, making me look, (to steal from Mr Noel Fielding,) like an alabaster retard!

I hate talking to the cosmetics girls on the beauty counters in shops as I feel like such a numpty as I only ever wear mascara and am a 21 year old, with no real make-up knowledge! Therefore, I thought that you ladies may be able to help me ?

Please recommend me a foundation.

I'm happy to use a mineral powder, a cream, a liquid or a mousse, please just let me know which you feel is better for my skin.

Many thanks in advance ?

For me, I can't see past the mineral foundations at the moment. I use Bare Escentuals which is the original but most of the make-up brands are doing a mineral foundation now so I'm sure you could find one in your budget.

I also like tinted moisturisers in the summer time on holiday and stuff so if you aren't used to wearing a lot of make-up thats a good option.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.

If you are not used to wearing foundation every day then i wouldnt buy a foundation.

I dont wear it everyday and on the occasions i do i feel really 'made up' and unnatural,

You have good skin so i dont think you need a full foundation for every day.

I use a the body shops tinted moisuriser and that works a treat and dosnt cost much....

I don't think you need anything heavy as your skin looks really clear . I would get a really good moisturiser to start with before you start thinking about foundation because that will even out any dryness etc and then you can go and try a few on and see what suits you best. Just go up to the counter and say I am looking for a foundation etc...be brave!

I don't wear foundation but have used Laura Mercier's Tinted moisturiser and their mineral powder. Only thing is they are over £30 each but they are the best I have used. Mac foundation is supposed to be quite good but can't tell you the price.

As for the discolouring round your mouth - I get that a little bit - looks like I have lip liner on constantly and have a little patch that looks like I haven't wiped my mouth properly if I've been gulping down tea. I use (again Laura Mercier - I don't work for them honest!) a little pencil that looks like a biege eyeliner but works a bit like a concealer. Can't remember the name of it but it works a treat for that problem.

See, my friend put this on me once and I liked it, but I think it made my skin a bit more pimply. (But I can't really remember)

Does it cover discolouration and my dark eyes, or would I use something else on top?

I use Mac Tinted moisturiser through the week and i have Mac studio fix foundation for going out/weekends. Sometimes i mix them together just when i want a medium coverage. Cant recommend them enough. There about £18 each.

I use the Clarins extra firming foundation. Its the only one I have found I can wear comfortably (dry skin). others just seem to kind of 'sit on top' of my skin and highlight any flaky bits! This blends really well!

Bit more than you said - £24-£27 a bottle or something. But I don't wear it everyday, and each bottle probably lasts me over 6 months.

i think if you are spending a bit, a trip to a counter is best. Ask to try a few, and then go away and wear it for a few hours/the rest of the day before going back to buy (or to try something else).

In your pic i cant even see the discolouration and you havnt got dark eyes

Im not sure though really - you could use a bit of conceiller (sp) and then used the tinted moisturiser??

Touch au Lait from YSL is a brilliant coverup/conceiller but its about £24 a pop!!!! eek

Hello, I don't wear foundation very often but have recently bought No.17 (Boots own) mineral foundation. It has a lovely texture and is very light but gives an even tone and a touch of colour. It hasn't caused me any spots whatsoever (and I have very sensitive skin). I think the price is really reasonable. If I was to wear foundation every day I would probably look into Bare Mineral make-up as heard that's good but for a cheaper alternative try No.17!

I have the problem of foundation making my skin dry and flaky too!

I hate to imagine the amount of money i've spent on foundation over the past few months! I'm doing my own make up on my wedding day and i'm on a mission to find the perfect foundation! I've found that tinted moisturisers work best on my dry skin, the olay touch of foundation one is quite good!

At the moment i'm using the bare minerals foundation (well it's a powder really) which is probbaly my fav so far, but a bit on the pricey side, about £15 i think!

Have you tried using a primer before you apply foundation? I find this helps, at the moment i'm using Bare minerals "Prime Time" The description on the box says it's developed to combat flaky skin, dryness and rough patches, large pores and uneven texture and skin tone. It does work for me, but again on the pricey side, about £18 for a small bottle!

God i sound like a complete foundation addict ? I'm not i swear, i only wear it if i'm going out on a night out or something!

Finding a foundation is trial and error i find. Hope this helps!

Ditto regarding "foundation sitting on skin" and making it flaky! My skin is too white it's virtually transparent but not in a nice porcelain way (more like a plastic bag of corned beef) so I find a lot of foundations tend to look like an orange or white facemask on me depending on the shade. But I plucked up the courage and visited a Bobbi Brown counter who were brilliant They were very kind and patient with me and took time to find a good colour match. I usually use and oil based one but also use a smoothing serum by Estee Lauder first which seems to help by stopping the foundation collecting on the dryer patches IYSWIM

I would recommend Vie at Home's Mineral Foundation in light with their Kabuki brush (buy both for £20 saving £6.50)

    or

Flawless Perfection in Ivory (£15). This is a lovely light foundation but with great coverage. It lets your skin breathe and doesn't come off on clothing, phone etc. This is the foundation I use on all my brides because it's very long lasting.

As for the discolouration then I would recommend their Correct & Perfect (£10). It has a green corrector for any red areas, a lilac corrector to lift and brighten your complexion and 2 shades of concealer for perfect coverage.

You also have a 30 day money back guarantee on any VAH products (except earrings)

If you want any more help then please feel free to email me - ******.*********@********.***

I've spent loads on foundation recently as it always sits on top of my skin, looks flaky and slides off!!

I've been using this mineral foundation https://www.elementalbeauty.co.uk/, and it's absolutely excellent. They do little sample phials so you can get the right colour and are just so helpful. I found them very highly recommended on a certain money saving website.

I've also been using No.7 Protect and Repair foundation (or whatever it's called) which is also very nice.

Prefer the Elemental Beauty one though.

I'm now going to read through them all thoroughly and do some research, lol!

I'll let you ladies know how I get on.

(If you've only just got to this post, please keep recommending foundations and tinted moisturisers! ? )

I've started using this one by benefit, it's a bit above the £20 mark though:

    http://www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk/gp/product/B001QXNT6W/sr=1-2/qid=1242747786/ref=sr_1_2/279-6415141-6205256?ie=UTF8&n=48506031&bcBrand=core

Previously always used clinique superbalanced ones (they're good too). I like the benefit one at the moment it's coverage seems very good, I'm naturally very pale (I'm using the champagne colour) but have been ill recenlty so look even paler, and my skin is also quite blemished as a result, but the benefit one covers this really well. It also feels light and smooth on my skin, not like its clogging my pores up. The woman on the benefit counter told me it was a mineral foundation, so maybe that's why it feels so light?

Ooh la la I can totally sympathise with you on the flaky face look with foundations. For that very reason I never used to wear any, I'd only put some on for special occasions and I was using virgin vie's one step face base, but I still had to put loads of moisturiser on my cheeks first so it didn't go all dry.

Im a self confessed telly sales addict (although I tend to just watch and be amazed but not buy as deep down I know most of it's guff!) Anyway! I saw a big half hour long advert thing for sheer cover minerals. The company is american, but they sell in the UK.

I spent ages trawling the internet looking up reviews and people seemed to love the product but were complaining that when you buy from them you get 'locked in' and they automatically send you more makeup every three months which ends up costing loads, didn't fancy that so I looked on flea bay and they had loads on, brand new, factory sealed. I bought one of the kits and the stuff is fab. It comes with an awesome concealer which would cover any discolouration. Have a google for their website and look at some of the before and after pics, they're really good. There is also a video on you tube from a woman with a birth mark on her face that she covers up (she's filming from her own home) and it's awesome how much it covers. I also have to say that you don't feel like you have loads of make up on, probably the same as any mineral foundation, it's really light x

(sorry for the big excessive post!!)

    Hi

I agree with the others, you have really good skin. I too don't wear much foundation, for my bridal make-up trial they used Virgin Vie foundation and this felt really light, my own that I use is Bourgeous 10 hr sleep effect, it gives you a really smooth finish. I would recommend going to use the trial testers though, as some foundations are fine for some people, but bring others out in rashes etc x

My friend who is doing my makeup for the wedding recommended Estee Lauder double wear to me. My cheeks are prone to breaking out in small red spots (not pimply ones, more like wee red marks) I'm quite conscious of them now. This evens my skin out all over and you can't see them at all. It does feel a tad heavy when its first on so it might not suit if you don't wear a lot of foundation but I think they also do a 'light' version. I wasn't keen on going to ask the sales assistants for advice either but when I knew what product I had to ask for, I just asked her to colour match it to my skin. Having the right shade makes all the difference, previously when I bought foundation for myself it was a bit of a lucky guess!

Another tip that she gave me is to use a brush to put foundation on, not your fingers! The one I got is from the body shop £11, a bit pricey but I have noticed the difference since Ive been using it

I wear foundation a lot (bad skin!) and am pale too. I would definitely recommend Laura Mercier - I use their primer everyday and it helps stop dryness and have the foundation for special occasions. I wore it to a friends wedding and was impressed how good it looked at the end of a long day (including much dancing).

I wear clinique for everyday, and it is OK but not as good as the Laura mercier stuff, but is cheaper and they do a light tinted moisturiser type which is good for summer.

You can get Laura mercier in John Lewis I think.

You should go for some make overs at beauty counters, preferably when they have an event with a make-up artist rather than only the normal assistants to find out what suits you best.

    Hi Ooh la la

Like you I rarely wear make up but I have recently started using some of the benefit products and wold reccamend their some kind of geourgeous foundation, it feels super light on and hsn't given me any adverse skin reactions. In addition to this I sometimes use erase paste fpr dark circles under my eyes but I have to say i your photo your skin looks pretty geourgeous and I can't see any discolouration.

(as for make up girls me to I avoid them I'm 29 and don't have a clue about make up)!

    Thanks again everyone.

Drifter - I've got tonnes (well a bit!) of Benefit make-up and I love it, but I've never tried "some kind of gorgeous", because I've always thought it looks quite orange in the compact! I'm flying to Italy on Saturday, so I'm going to have a look in duty-free and ask to try some different ones....

.....anyone want anything from Duty-free? ?

    Hi there,

I have used Sheercover in the past and it is good, it also smells really nice, but for my skin type I use MAC. I have broken out in small blotches on my cheeks after starting to take care of my skin with products from the bodyshop. MAC Foundation covers everything amazingly well, and it also feels really light on the skin, its under £20 if I remember right. I bought a brush to apply my foundation as it seems to go on better, the brush was VERY expensive however. The woman at MAC are very helpful and can reconmend a good one for your skin colour, but they are there to sell you their product so just stick to your guns and only buy what you want.

I found because it does such a good job I want to wear it when ever I go out into town or go shopping but the problem with that is my H2B is going to keep seeing me how im going to have my makeup done on the day and I wont have the wow factor.

Hope you find the right one for you

    HTH

    Zoe
