free bar or pay bar....

GREENWICHBRIDE2B, 30 April, 2018 at 20:11 Posted on Planning 0 1

.interested to hear others views on how much of a bar tab they will have for evening guests....was thinking of around £750 but most people I speak to think that most guests would expect to pay for own drinks...so now I am thinking just enough to cover 1st drink so around £250 /£300...

So, we were initially looking at unlicensed venues, and were going to get a selection of drinks and then do BYO.

However, we then ended up falling for a venue which had an alcohol license, so they wanted us to have a bar that was at least staffed to ensure their licence wasn't jeopardized (fair enough!). We looked at options to cover the cost of all the drinks for people, but a) it was really expensive and b) the coordinator at our venue pointed out that people often like to buy the bride and groom a drink.

So we ended up booking a bar service, but we will be putting wine on the table for the meal, and providing a welcome drink and toast. Cash bar after that.

We did quiz our bar provider to check out the price of drinks, as we don't want our guests to pay a ridiculous amount for a pint, and we went with a bar that is doing a good deal (£3.50 a pint). This was important to us, as guests already pay so much, and we want them to feel like they can have a good time.

I think pretty much everyone will be happy with that. Most people would expect to pay for drinks at a wedding I think.

Sorry, I realise I've rambled a bit (it's been a long day!), but I hope this helps a bit!

I've never been to a wedding with a free bar. Usually people supply a welcome drink and wine with the meal.
