Friday fun thread - what's your wedding pet peeve?

FutureMrsRon, 20 May, 2011 at 10:19 Posted on Planning 0 61

Now I'm not trying to start WW3 with this, just interested. There is so much involved in a wedding these days that you'd never even dream of thinking about in normal life - what's the one bit of wedding mania that really gets you annoyed at the ridiculousness of it all? NB - please don't get annoyed or offended by anyone's answers; variety is what keeps us interesting!

I'll kick it off with my personal hatred (possibly too harsh a word but I can't think of a better one) of chair covers. In my opinion they are a massive rip off developed by the Wedding Gods to get more money out of you.

Tell me yours ?

Pet peeves makes me think of the Friends episode with that game.

Anyway, my pet peeve is when people decline an invite and don't even say sorry. Bad manners in my humble opinion. Especially as my RSVPs are done online with a little space to type in.

I also hate chair covers because I couldn't not have them. My brain wouldn't allow it. It saw chair covers and then I had to have them. Luckily my very reasonable florist is supplying them. But still.

Bloody wedding transport and people thinking they're too good for it and MUST be driven specially to the venue in a different vehicle to the one WE HAVE PROVIDED. Grrr!

Colour schemes - I'm just not a fan of matchy matchy stuff (absolutely all down to personal taste though), I prefer co-ordinating stuff...although some might call is clashing I guess!

Also, balloons....oh yeah, and overly styled hair...and top hat and tails...and fake flowers....

Ok. That is all. I think.

    Lazy RSVPers

A third party text via OHs dad saying "we're not coming" 2 months AFTER the RSVP deadline is just not good enough I'm afraid!!

Bridesmaids that want to be bridesmaids for the title of it and it makes them feel important, and then dont actually want to do anything practical with the wedding. With hindsight I would have done without bm☹️

Button Bouquets - I'm sorry, I know they're really popular but I just loathe them on sight. They're creepy.

Balloons - It's a wedding not a children's party. My SIL2B was horrified when I said we wasn't having balloons.

People sticking their oar in - OH's work colleague made a comment on the evening buffet and it threw OH into a panic no one would like the buffet and he wanted to start changing it just because one nob couldn't keep his opinion to himself. You want curry, fine, go to the Indian takeway and get one.

    Various ones, including

    - the price of everything going up just because it's a wedding.

    - people forgetting that RSVP means "please reply" not "just let us know, when it's convenient to you, if you might come or not".

    - "Not sure if we can make it" - we've given you 6 months notice to find someone to catsit / arrange childcare / book time off work / save up / find a hotel etc. Why is it so difficult to be organised?

    - "oh but you must have chair covers, it's a wedding". Nope, we don't.

    - "You must provide loads of free alcohol for your guests". Nope, we don't.

    1. Strapless dresses with ruching to one side, and especially skirts with those hitched up bits (don't know technical term). They all look the same to me.

    2. Rude guests interfering.

Balloons. Our kids will not be happy that we're not having any.

Fakery. I get women wanting to look their best, and fair enough if you get nails/tan/extensions etc normally, but I don't get these women that have all this fakery just for their wedding day, then don't bother afterwards.

Generic white/ivory dresses. Most look the same to me. I like dresses with something different about them, a bit of personality...

Plastic banners. Those horrid "just married" things, they're just awful.

Chair covers. I just fail to see the point of them. A chair is a chair, who is really going to comment that the chairs don't match the brides knickers?

    Pet Peeves for me are:

    1. PINK!!! Sorry ladies, especially those of you with your colour scheme pink - I have never really liked to colour and it is so over used at weddings.

    2. Guests who wear massive hats or mahoosive fascinators

    3. Balloons. Get a bit tackier why dontcha?

    Oh where do I start?!

I hate the way people always have to tell you what thier daughter/friend/niece had and how much it all cost.

I HATE balloons, sweetie tables and ring cushions. And chair covers - what's the point?

And the "W tax" that everyone suddenly adds when you say it's for a wedding. "Lipstick? That will be £4.95. Oh, if it's for a wedding it will be £19.99'

And I am incredibly annoyed at people keep asking who's giving me away - my dad died 5 years ago and it still kills me to think he won't be there. You'd think people might guess it's a tough subject if you dad is no longer here. Although it's sweet for a 20-something to be symbolically handed to her groom by her dad in a church wedding, but it's rather old fashioned and a little bit pointless for me.

    Magic wedding price increases!

Chair covers! Truely hate the things.

Balloons - fine for decorating a venue that needs decorating, but not just coz it's a wedding

My being unbelieveably fussy about accessories and decoration on the dress... All the dresses I've liked the shape of have been wrong in how they're decorated on me - too much/not enough/ wrong place so make me look fat, too itchy under the arms. So dressmaker for the dress, I'm going to make my own tiara and probably most of my jewellery.

All adult bridesmaid's dresses being strapless. Variety of styles (and somewhere under £250!) would be nice...

The guest list. Divorced parents. The top table plan. How to solve the plus one dilemmas.

As for the sudden need for a crash course in dresses, fabrics, flowers, jewellery, hair etc.

The children debate, Useless bridesmaids, Hen Parties - the garenteed way to fall out with almost everyone, Balloons, Ring Cushions, Garters, sweetie tables, guest books and

Invitations - why do I have to write a huge list of instructions with accommodation lists etc. These people are adults and should be able to sort simple stuff like this out for themselves. I am too stressed with our wedding to worry about where someone is staying or their taxi. FFS, suck it up people, you manage to dress yourself in the morning and hold down a job, the least you could do is make my life easier and not expect me to be your bloody PA, because if it hasn't escaped your chuffing attention, I'm getting married. *(breathes easier)*

Didn't really think I had any until the other week but I am so sick of everyone asking me what our theme is. I didn't think it was compulsory to have a theme for a wedding?

I don't care if things don't match - they may or may not but if they do that would be because I liked something not because I went out of my way to make it that way. Some of my friends think I'm committing an offence for thinking like this but I really don't mind.

I'm sure there'll be more by the time we get there! :-)

Squishybunny - that just made me laugh so much!

There are so many already suggested that I've been reading going "yup, yup, yup" as I've been going through! My current peeve is car hire - why does it cost a wedding car £200 to drive less than a mile and back twice purely because the minimum has to be one hour? They will be working for less than half that ggrrrr
