Friday or Sunday Wedding - Which is best?!

Miss-b, 6 June, 2014 at 11:36 Posted on Planning 0 22

Hi Hitched,

A bit of background - My H2B finally popped the question on Christmas day after nearly 7 years together (Yay!!) We initially had been looking at getting married Spring 2016 as we will be fronting a fair amount of the cost and need time to save! I have recently decided I want to bring it forward a year to Spring 2015 (we are thinking end of April / beginning May) as I want to be his wife, but also I am very fortunate to still have all of my grandparents and I want them to be at the wedding and they haven't been in the best health over the last year / 18 months (Maybe a tad morbid but they are very special to me as they have helped me a lot over my life!)

To try and keep costs down I have decided a Friday or Sunday will be best (I'm personally not a fan of mid-week weddings) but I just wanted everyone's thoughts on if the Friday or Sunday will be better??

I think a Friday would be better as people have the whole weekend after the wedding, rather than having to go to work the next day!

If anyone who has gotten married on either of these days has any insight it will be greatly appreciated Smiley smile Feeling slightly overwhelmed at the moment!!

Thank you xx

    Firstly...congratulations on your engagement!

I am getting married on a Friday, I am probably biased but would probably say this would be better than a Sunday. People will have the whole weekend to recover & it just feels nicer as it is at the start rather than the end of the weekend ?

My wife & I got married last year on a Sunday. It was a lot cheaper for us than a Friday or of course Saturday. So that was definitely the overriding factor for us.

The only downside I can think of on a Sunday is a lot of people left the evening disco early so they didn't have to take the next day off. So instead of a midnight finish, most people had gone by about 10-10.30pm.

Thankfully we didn't mind too much since we were utterly knackered but it's something to bear in mind if you want to bop the night away with your friends & family. If so then Friday would be better.

I personally would prefer a Friday over a Sunday. I would have chosen a Friday for our wedding if it wasn't for the fact most of my family live 400 miles away! They'll have to have Friday off work to get here in time for the wedding and would I feel bad asking them to take the Thursday off too in order to travel.

We chose to have a Friday wedding for this reason.

I've been to a Sunday wedding once and that was great too, but some people didn't book the next day off and therefore sloped off a little earlier than perhaps they would have if they didn't have to work.

I guess it all depends on what jobs your guests have and whether they'd have any trouble getting the Friday off to actually attend.

Thank you sooo much everyone!! I was more inclined towards a Friday anyway, for the reasons you've all stated!!

I don't think most people would have an issue getting the Friday off, we plan to give everyone plenty of notice as we aren't doing it on a Saturday and we want as many of the people we invite as possible to come and anyone that has to travel any sort of distance is retired!! My Mums in Cheltenham and we're Kettering but I'm going to ask her to take a few days off prior anyway to help me with last minute bits!

I just want to get somewhere booked now as I'm panicking because I've bought it forward a year lol!!!

I'd go for bank holiday Sunday or if that's not possible Friday as it means people won't leave early as they know they have the next day to recover. Did you have a venue in mind and are you certain they offer discounts on Fridays and Sundays? Only reason I ask is I noticed some venues don't discount for Fridays any more, and some venues don't discount Sundays either.

Also be aware that if you have any teacher friends/relatives they may not be able to get Fridays off during term time.

Friday, every time. While people will have to take a day off for a Friday, they'll all be able to stay until whatever time, as most will have the Saturday free anyway.

With a Sunday wedding, we tend to see people sloping off from around 8pm, as they all have to be at work the next day! Sometimes it's just a few, but if some of the guests have traveled a fair distance, it can be really noticeable!

I'm getting married on a Friday and other than a couple of people not being able to make it due to school/work issues it has been ok so far. And on the Saturday we intend to have a meal with those who have stayed over and make a weekend of it.

having said that my first wedding was on a Sunday and no one really left early.

Bank holiday Sundays are usually charged at the Saturday rate. We are marrying in winter to keep costs down and not competing with holidays and other weddings. Whatever you do people will be there to share your day. I had a Sunday wedding yesterday and I left at 12. Most people stayed until 3am! As long as you give them plenty if notice they will want to celebrate. I was EXHausted by 12 tho so try and arrange your ceremony for 2.30/3 so it's not a ridiculously long day xx

I'm getting married on Sunday during half term as we have a lot of children coming. We did think about a Friday but it was more expensive than a Sunday. I'm hoping people don't leave too early but you never know!

Also were originally going to have it in January and there were no half terms so the kids wouldn't have been able to come because of school and then the parents would have had to get the kids from school!

Choosing a date is complicated!! Xxx

    Congrats!

I got married on a Friday: Best. Decision. Ever.

We ended up getting married a long way from where most of our friends live, so almost everyone had to stay over in a hotel. But as it was near the cotswolds and beautiful towns (Leamington Spa, Stratford-Upon-Avon etc.) meant people could make a weekend of it.

I would of said Friday but I am attending a Friday wedding this week, both me and OH are contractors so have lost a days pay, we have had to take the kids out of school and due to the fact it's a fair distance away we are having to drive over late Thursday night and pay for a hotel for 2 nights. I personally would of preferred a Sunday with kids and work etc. probably wouldn't of left early maybe would of just took half a day on the Monday. I understand why people want Friday weddings but as a guest it's caused me issues and a lot of expense. If it hadn't of been for my daughter being a BM I would of probably only attended the evening xx

I think Friday is better, then everyone can make a long weekend of it if they want. :-)
