Frocks to withstanding a bit of heat

Ampy, 17 October, 2012 at 17:01 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 13

I know there are threads for bridal shops on here but I'm looking for advice specifically for a dress for abroad. Not sure if there are shops out there that specialise in this area (or do some shops have a larger selection than others).

Can anyone offer any tips of what fabrics to go for and what to avoid?

I'm a naturally cold person who has hot sweats if the temperature is even slightly raised (obviously the logical thing to do is to get married in the sun lol) - I don't want to be worrying about sweaty bits in my frock.

Ideally I'm looking at Manchester - although I'm happy to travel. I live near Middleton.

Does anyone have any suggestions of where I can go?

Thanks x

I'd look for silks and chiffon, and avoid heavy satin. I knew I wanted a chiffon dress, although not exactly what style, so I asked when I visited shops just to try on chiffon dresses. Some had lots, some had none, but that was fine. I only actually had an appointment in one of the 8 shops I looked in - the others I just popped in to see what they had (this was weekdays though, I probably would have needed appts on a Saturday).

    Thanks

I'm looking to make a start next weekend so will definitely ring ahead to explain my situation - I can't tell them what kind of dress I am looking for as I have absolutely no idea.

Gosh you looked in 8 shops?

    Wozers.

I naively assumed that I'd walk into one and immediately see the dress I loved - I don't want people getting bored of traipsing around with me as I can be quite indecisive.

Let's see how the first trip goes and then I can come up with a plan B (me secretly visiting shops and looking and then taking people along so they don't have to endure the sitting around)

    Hiya,

I had a chiffon dress so it was fairly cool although it still had a few layers to make it like a wedding dress. I struggled to find many suitable ones in the shops & ended up looking at destination dresses on the web & then going to a dressmaker & paid 1/2 the price of the ones i'd seen in the bridal shops. Here's a couple of my dress.

Hi Ampy, I'm in Manchester too!

I would actually start to look at the shops near to you and look at the designers they stock. Some designers do a large range of light dresses, such as Maggie sottero, jenny packham and amanda wakeley. Start with shops that stock those ranges and work outwards from there.

My dress wasn't chiffon, it was a light tulle, so incredibly lightweight but had a little bit of structure to it. You can have a nosey on my wedding repor if you like- the link is in my signature.

The shops I went to were...

The white closet in west didsbury

    Amy Louise Bridal in Nantwich

    Cheshire brdal in Altrincham

The bridal shop in Didsbury village.

    I have serious wedding envy

Your dress is to die for

Your hair is how I want mine - I've been stuggling to find a down-do that will work with a veil. Where did you get your veil from?

More importantly where did you get your dress from?

    xx

The dress is gorgeous - I have dress envy grr

Did you just use a local seamstress?

I am assuming you took pictures to her and the design was done from that?

Hey Ampy, I got both my dress and veil from the same shop, Amy Louise bridal in Nantwich. The dress was Jenny packham and the veil was somebody Joyce or something like that!

    Hi Ampy,

Thank you I love my dress & felt really good in it, wish I could do it all again. The dressmaker is in West Yorks & between me & my Mum we knew a few people who had their dresses done & had been excellent. I just took photos from the inernet of dresses I liked & then had a chat with her & we went from there. It was perfect for the heat, I was never too hot. I'm sure you will find the ONE.

    Mrs Imp

Where in Ibiza did you get married?

I am juggling the location in my head - it was somewhere that HsB's mum and dad used to go everywhere so it might feel like a part of them is there (although to be honest, we could be anywhere and feel that they are watching over us x)

The spa looks absolutely knockout - perfect for a hangover pickup lol x

One more thing - where did you shop for the mens suits, they look cool (in both senses lol).

We're not having much luck finding lightweight decent suits - I want H2B to have a nice fancy one (possibly designer) as it's his big day as well.

Also, do they just have 100% cotton shirts or is there a better option to reduce sweatiness - he is a real sweater if he gets too warm, as am I, remind me again why we're getting amrried abroad lol

    xxx

H's suit was from M&S of all places, after we looked all over the place, including in upmarket tailors. And I think he looked absolutely gorgeous!

Hey Ampy. C's suit was a ted baker suit, it was from their summer suit range. He actually got it at Cheshire oaks so it was only 200 quid rather than 600 for the full price suit. The best man and ushers wore linen trousers and linen shirts from next.

Plus it's something he could wear again.

Ooh I love Cheshire Oaks, I feel a visit coming on...x
