From HIGH to low...

MrsMac2be, 5 October, 2010 at 14:52 Posted on Planning 0 27

Mum and I went bridesmaid dress shopping today and to be honest I could cry right now Smiley sad

I couldnt find any dresses in the colour that I want (Cadbury Purple) but found lots of styles I like..

Mum was really negative about the colour ANYWAY and then got the woman in the shop to start on me saying that purple is a funeral colour and I should agree with my mum on the navy blue colour SHE picked... I have my bridesmaids telling me that they dont want strapless but this I can agree with as they are quite big busted and feel a little self conscious about their boobs jiggling around!!

I have now spoken to a dress maker who I am going to see on Thursday morning to see if she can make my dresses in purple in the style that I like but should I listen to mum and go with what the majority want in the navy blue?? Feeling quite low Smiley sad

You have a long way to go yet. Perhaps sit down and research a little more into the colour and style that you would prefer, not your mom as ultimately it is your wedding and you should have the scheme you want. Are you planning to order them soon?

    No.

It's your wedding, nobody elses, and if you want Cadbury Purple then go for it. I hear it's a really "in" colour at present anyway.

The only person that should carry any weight in objecting to your dress - and by extension colourscheme - is your h2b, but at the end of the day he shouldn't know what style you have until you turn up at the ceremony.

Mums can try and be very persuasive, but perhaps it's because nobody got married in purple when she got married she can't figure out why you would want to wear it. Out of interest, have you ever seen anyone in Cadbury Purple at a funeral? I haven't.

Bridesmaids styles, yes I can see them wanting to have an input in what they wear - but is strapped such a big problem to you?

    Hi

I just had to reply cos I like yourself had a few raised eyebrows when I said I wanted Cadbury purple as part of my theme but stuck to my guns and now my two older bridesmaids and my mum are loving it!!

They just have to see how lovely it looks first.

I cant believe the woman in the shop said that How bl**dy rude!!!

One of my older bridesmaid has quite an ample busom ands we have picked these dresses

They are from Ebay but made to measure by a lady in Birmingham. Just waiting for them to arrive now so will let you know what they turn out like.

I would also say ITS YOUR WEDDING!! An d you should have what you want hun.

    xxxx

You know my feelings on cadburys purple. I love it and its a very popular colour for weddings.

You must go with what you want and no body else. You don't want to be further down the line and regret the choice you've made.

I would definitely suggest sitting down and going through some colour schemes and see which one works best for you and ONLY YOU!

    Thank you girls and aj...

I really dont mind about the straps as I can totally understand where my bridesmaids are coming from with regards to their boobs, I want them to feel comfortable on the day rather than worrying about potentially "popping out".

I am meeting a dressmaker on Thursday morning to discuss the colour/styles but I do love the dress on ebay that you have flashed!! Let me know how it goes with them, as my fiance has family in Birmingham (he comes from there) so if they are really good I may just contact her to see what she can do.

I just know that I'm on a bit of a downer now though.. I know I have plenty of time and measurements etc of my bridesmaids can change drastically, I just want to know that there are dresses out there in the colour that I want that are going to be available and I just can't find any at the moment.

Mums colours have gone from taupe (yeeuuuwwww) to mauve to navy basically any other colour BUT purple!!!!

My two of my friends have got married in Purple and looked gorgeous!! I was bridesmaid for one of them and we wore ivory but it all worked really well.

Apart from being the last one to be picked up from registry office after the wedding and having people coming up and congratulating me!! Got fed up with explaining I was the bridesmaid in the end and just accepted their congrats lol

"... and AJ" ... I like it Smiley smile

I found this thread from a few months back about Cadbury Purple which has some images and stuff that you might find helpful in persuading people?

My bridesmaids are coing to be in cadbury purple ish! we have ordered them from Alfred Andelo, they are strapless but the lady in the shop said they can add straps so one is going to have 2 straps, one a halter neck and one strapless!

you have got to stick yo your guns! are the bridesmaids happy with your colour choice! dont give in to your mum, especially as you have some time to go, stand your ground from the start! i had to do this with my mum after an "well, if it was my wedding..." to which i responded "but its not is it? I apreciate your advice and comments but OH and I make the final decisions"

she has been very well behaved since, only a couple of slips!

and purple being a funeral colour pah! there are loads of hitchers having purple, doesnt bother us!

When I think of wedding colours, purple and pink are the ones that pop into my head. I don't think it's funerally at all. And whilst I love Navy (it is my colour, after all), you have to have what you want. Besides, it's a gorgeous colour, and if I wasn't having navy I would be having it myself x

Purple is this year's "in" colour it would seem. Every shop i've gone into this week has been rammed with purple stuff! It's not at all a funeral colour, and even if it was, it's YOUR wedding and if YOU want that colour, blimmin well go for it. Except maybe next time go shopping without your mum.

There will always be someone who raises an eyebrow at your tastes, but you have to go with your instinct, not just pleasing others.

FYI, that one-shoulder dress is lush! Off to sneak a peek at eBay and see if I can get something like it in a midnight blue.........!

Don't worry, you've just got to have what YOU want. It's your wedding, and although you want your BM's to be happy, there's no need to feel downhearted, keep searching, and you will find them!

They do say Cadburys purple can be a little difficult to find, but I've seen a lot of people with that colour so it must be possible!! ?

Ah poor you! I have never heard of purple being a funeral colour. I have on the other hand heard lots of people say that lilies are funeral flowers, and look at how many people have those at weddings! So don't worry about that.

When you say should you go with the majority and choose blue instead, who do you mean by the majority? Because if you mean the dress shop lady and your mum, that isn't a majority. You can discount the dress shop lady for a start, as I'm assuming you don't know her from Adam and she isn't coming to the wedding. What do your BMs think of your choice of colour? As long as they are happy to wear it, and you and your OH like it, then that's all you need to know.

There will be plenty of Cadbury purple dresses out there, I've seen loads on the high street at the moment and dressmakers will be able to make you something up in a nice pruple fabric easily enough.

Don't order them yet though in case a BM gets preggers or something ?

I was thinking about this thread on a 20 minute bus journey home this evening.

At one bus stop I noticed 3 people wearing "Cadbury Purple" items of clothing.

Then an advertisment in that colour.

At the next bus stop there were 2 more people wearing it.

I then noticed a shop painted in it.

I gave up at that point.

It's very popular at the moment and if people don't like it, tell them to have a look round the high street - you'll be surprised where it turns up.

I bought a dress in cadbury purple the other week from New Look - you shouldn't have a problem finding it.

I never saw it as a funeral colour - more regal??? plus what others have said about lillies - who really cares!

Have whatever you want to have and ballcocks to everyone else!!!

I am having navy BMs because it goes with our winter wonderland theme, but if I had been getting marrid at any other time of year purple was the colour I would have. I love it and most people can carry it off really well. I looked on the highstreet and in bridal shops at dresses and found Alfred Angelo dresses were nice but then discovered the Dessy range, there are so many styles and so many colours and you would prob pay about £150. I am sure they would have the colour you want and something to suit your BMs. I say stick to purple!
