Fuming - HR type advice required

RebTheEck, 6 March, 2013 at 17:01 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

I'm spitting feathers. ?

My manager sends me round the twist and back again regularly but his latest stunt takes the biscuit.

I've had/got 4 medical appointments all with different people (nurse, osteopath, GP & consultant) in the space of a few days.

This afternoon, while stood beside his desk talking to a colleague I notice a piece of paper with my name on it. On closer inspection it says "R... has the following appointments..." & lists the dates & times of the appointments & who they are with!

It was sat on his desk on top of other papers - am I right to be pi$$ed off about this or am I over reacting?

I couldn't take it up with him because he wasn't there but I feel I need to.

    Hmm, can't decide.

In principle, you could be reasonably annoyed at your boss leaving evidence of your current medical appointments lying around for all to see.

However, in mitigation, it's a pretty mild list of stuff so perhaps he thought it wouldn't be too problematic. I assume he wouldn't have written down:

    "Monday - Reb - abortion clinic" ?

I'd be inclined to point out that you'd rather he didn't leave such details lying around but I'm not sure I'd be "spitting feathers" over it.

I think it was a bit lax on his part but I don't think I'd be particularly bothered unless it said something like 'R - appointment for remove bum warts' or something ?. I'd just have a word and ask him to be more mindful in future. I would also doubt if anyway noticed, I know when I go to speak to my boss I don't scan the papers on his desk to see what hes got on there

HR departments often keep records of appointments so this in itself isn't an issue.

Leaving personal information on his desk in full view was an oversight on his part, but I would be careful raising it as you probably shouldn't really be seen to be reading things on his desk either. I would maybe have a word and ask him to be more careful with your personal information but I wouldn't start kicking up a huge fuss to be honest.

I wouldn't tell him if it was something like that because I can't trust him to keep it to himself - he's proved that on less personal things many times, including the cleaner knowing I was going in for an op on my knee & what I was having done! 2 of them were gynae related but I'm still not going to tell him that - it's none of his business!

It was on the same end of the desk as his bin so would have been in eye sight of the cleaner emptying the bin.

I haven't actually taken much time off, most of the appointments have been at one end of the day or the other & I've made up the time plus they owe me days in overtime, literally.

I agree with Mrs C, it was a bit slack of him to leave it out but I would be wary about admitting I was looking at paperwork on his desk.

As others have said really. I wouldn't be "spitting feathers" over it. If it is bothering you, I guess you could speak to him about making sure personal details isn't on full view of everyone. I don't think it would bother me that much as an isolated incident.

This has crossed my mind but I've had concerns about him for a while in terms of his memory (particularly short term). On several occasions he's sworn point blank he doesn't remember talking about something a few days before. He's also been one for writing things down & keeping heaps & heaps of notes & files but recently I think it's started to get worse with his note taking particularly of seemingly minor things. If there is something going on (with him) I'm not about to start making it look like I've got a vendetta against him which a log could. I suppose all I can do is monitor things until it becomes dangerous or causes significant problems at work.

I will still have a word with him about the list on his desk - writing it in a diary is one thing but not on a piece of paper laying on his desk. He's in another office today & when I came in this morning it had been cleared away but during any given day there are a lot of people who leave things on his desk.
