Further to the bed thread...

Do you have a top-sheet?

As in, you put a sheet over the mattress - bottom sheet - obviously, but do you have one over you too, between your body & the duvet or quilt, or blankets?

We don't. My legs get restless and tangled in a top sheet. I hate them. I only leave them on in hotels with blankets on the bed.

I thought that was only done in hotels? I find it very uncomfortable and what's the point? It's just another item that needs washing.

Han xxx (although I'm sure sherry will agree with me ?)

God no. I'd only have a top sheet if I then had a blanket. Not between me and a duvet.

Not usually, I get restless legs too and hate my feet getting tangled up.

Although, sometimes in the summer we use a top-sheet and have the duvet folded back at the bottom of the bed so it can be pulled up if either of us gets chilly in the night...does that count?

We do. between us and the duvet.

it's actually less washing as you dont need to do the duvet cover as often...

Oooh gosh no, that would mean too much washing. My mum does but then she own a guest house and it's expected. Most the time peoplejust kick them off on the floor.

I never did in the UK but then I moved here and discovered that's the american way of making a bed. Although you do see duvets and covers it's far more common to have a sheet or sheets topped with a comforter that is itself coloured.

You also see sheet sets rather than just a fitted bottom sheet and I figured it was eaasier to buy a set as it handily solved the problem of me hating changing duvet covers and meant I could leave that for the cleaner to do once a fortnight.

As I tend not to bother making the bed properly though the sheet all too often ends up scrunched down at the bottom of the bed or on the floor!

No top sheet. Ugh, with all the cushion arranging I tend to on a daily basis, I would have to get up half an hour earlier to tackle this too! If I get chilly, I sleep with my dressing gown on top of the bed like some 80-something nanna!!!

Ooh no - I like to tuck the bottom of the duvet under my heels so a top sheet would prevent that

I love the feeling of having a sheet between us and the duvet but in reality I'm far too lazy to bother with it. We generally have one in summer though as I like to have a sheet on me when I get into bed and then pull the quilt up later in the night when it gets cooler.

No, I used to. I do the same as Kebab have a top sheet on in the summer with the quilt folded back.

    I don't iron bed sheets/duvets either!

I only iron what people see and that doesn't even include our pj's?

To answer LTP original question, no we have a valance sheet to cover the bed base, then a heated electric mattress protector and then the fitted sheet. Then finally the duvet with nothing in between.

I couldn't be ar$ed with all the hassle of fixing the sheets, its bad enough fixing the fitted sheet!!

    I haven't started a debate about ironing duvet covers have I? ?

Just to set the record straight, it's only one set that I actually iron - it's a waffle one and the ba$tard thing shrinks up if it's not ironed then it doesn't fit the duvet - I don't bother with the other sets.

Why the fuck would you iron a duvet cover? Seriously? You're going to sleep under it, not wear it to an interview. ?

Anyway, we have bed frame, mattress, fitted sheet, duvet in duvet cover, a pillow each in pillow cases. That is all that's required.

Despite hating making the bed, I do have a sheet between me and the duvet. Most of the year I don't use the duvet, so just lay under the sheet.

In winter the cat thinks the duvet is his (as he has it the rest of the year) and complains when I try to use it as well... selfish beast!

The first thing I do in a hotel bed is untuck the sheet from the bottom. It's a hideous entrapment, forcing the feet into unnatural ballet poses all night long otherwise. And my feet need to be freeeeeeeeeeeeee ?

Ironing duvet covers is only for those with a life expectancy of over 110.

We have a sheet in the summer when the duvet is put away out of use. A duvet is far too much in the Summer months but I can't sleep without a cover so a sheet is perfect.

Nope, just the duvet. I like to hang my legs out or hoik my leg over the duvet at night if i'm feeling hot, I couldn't do that if there was a sheet tucked in, well I could but it'd probably wake me up trying to fight it out from under the mattress.

My parents still have one I believe.

I really don't understand using a top sheet between the duvet or if you have one to tuck it in as well! Aarrgh...and don't get me started on ironing bed linen. Life is too short people!!

No top sheet for me - I like being able to stick my feel out and anyway it would make making the bed more of a hassle.

And yes, my cleaner irons the duvet cover.

When it's cold we add a top sheet, but it's only ever tucked in at the bottom, never at the sides. It does make it an awful lot warmer though - not just an extra thicknes of sheet warm, but the whole extra layer of air thing too.

I think I must have claustrophobic feet too as I always sleep with them poking out from under the covers (be it duvet, top sheet or whatever). I think I must overheat and my way of keeping cool is to stick my feet out of the bed!

We only use a top sheet in the summer so we can get to sleep nice and cool under just a sheet and then pull the duvet over us later in the night when it gets chillier. Also cos we've got a four seasons duvet it means we get to enjoy a lighter duvet in the summer and be nice and snug until the heavier weight one in the autumn and winter. As yet we've never had need to pin the two together for the super heavy wet 3 foot of snow outside version.

Also the cat sleeps on our bed (in fact half the time it feels as though it's his bed and we're just allowed to share it) so the bedding gets changed and washed every other week as otherwise the fur just gets too much!
