Just been reading various news websites and blogs re the protests yesterday. Most of the journalists seem to think the police did a good job overall- the protestors seem to think otherwise, their main complaint that the police were heavy handed and treated them all like criminals. They were stuck in a blockade for a few hours with no access to the toilet/drinks/feed etc. This included pregnant women, and children.

The thing is, rioting is a criminal act. If you have a crowd of people, some of which are rioting, you can't go in and pick out each rioter, so you have to contain the crowd. Which means IMO that if you go on a demo, you should be prepared for this, and take a drink, and cross your legs, or don't bl00dy well go on it. Especially don't take a child along and don't go if you're pregnant.

I am all for the right to demonstrate peacefully but lets be realistic, its easy to predict in advance which events may involve troublemakers - some people seem to put on this naive act just to suit them and it really annoys me.

I have desparately tried not to make comments like this so as not to 'stereotype' the protesters and get hauled across the coals. But .... with this I agree.

It's all kicking off again outside. Lula/ memyselfandi, where are you based?

Just outside RBS branch of yesterday's fame ... the baton's are out and the police dogs are off after them. 15 minutes ago, it was all peaceful so I don't know what kicked this one off. The average age of the protesters is around 18.

Ah ok - however, how likely is it that the people that got the grief were those that had done the taunting? As with most of these things, a few f**kwits end up making things difficult for everyone else. ?

I'm right at the northern edge city at the moment but the majority of people I know are Moorgate/Bank/BIshopsgate/London Wall. Luckily OH is currently based in the West End, RBS wanted him in for a job interview today and I'm very glad he's moved it back!

    Hope you're ok getting home.

Just wanted to bounce this now the the correct version of events has come out along with footage of the incident http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/7989027.stm It's clear that there was no attack on the ambulance or police at all (although one bottle was thrown nearby) and that the man who died- not a protester- was pushed to the ground by the police in an unprovoked attack.

Utterly sickening. It reminds me of the horrible lies leaked after Jean Charles de menezes was killed (that he's jumped a barrier, was acting suspiciously etc). I don't think anyone expects perfect decision-making from the police, nor is it really a shock that the force attracts more than its share of bad apples. What I do think is unforgiveable is the cover-up culture and the way the police allow/encourage lies to circulate that defame the victims of their mistakes.

It really is sickening, isn't it. I've always had a very positive view of the police in England (as a teenager I was evacuated from Manchester city centre before the 1995 bomb - excellent work by the police) and I'm sure that the vast majority of officers go about their jobs with complete professionalism, but events like and subsequent cover-ups these destroy any kind of trust.

Oh dear, seems I'm senile already! Sorry about your scar (didn't want to belittle the injuries people did suffer but when I think back I still can't believe there were no fatalities)

Couldn't agree more KN, the footage itself makes me feel quite ill, but worse is the leaking of lies and rumour in an attempt to cover up. Again. It makes one feel as if nothing has been learnt from cases like Menezes and Hillsborough.

I saw the footage on the Guardian website last night and it made me feel ill. Hopefully they will be able to identify the policeman involved. I can't remember whether it was this thread or another one where someone (P&aP?) commented that just as there are "hooligan" elements amongst the protesters they will be amongst the police as well (I'm paraphrasing). This seems to demonstrate that perfectly.

A bit further down on Cornhill people have attached flowers and tributes to a post - including some from his children. ?

Yes, that was me. Generally I have the highest regard for the police, and the difficult and dangerous job that they do. However, just like any other line of work, there will be a certain number of bullies, racists and those just in it to legally crack a few heads. It would be a shame for this minority to tarnish the reputation of the rest, but equally its naive to paint them all as paragons of virtue.

    It's very sad.

But this may have happened regardless of the events of the day - he may of been on the process of having a heart attack whilst walking from his place of work, from watching the footage I'd say that he was. Of course a question now would be did the 'Labelling' delay urgent help . Had he collasped on a normal day, I would say he would have had immediate help & maybe had a chance of survival

The fact the actual footage was filmed by a US Financial Trader shows how the crowd was mixed & not just protesters & quite ironic in view of what some were protesting about.
