Garden Party Ideas Please

simplygardens, 21 April, 2008 at 19:30 Posted on Planning 0 20

Hi, we're having a Civil Ceremony followed by a 'garden party' in the grounds of the hall we're getting married at. We've arranged to play garden games e.g. croquet, jenga, quoits, bowls etc whilst the guests drink fruit punch, followed by a meal but as our guests are around until 9pm I'm wondering what else we could do as we have no DJ or evening reception as such. I've wondered about setting off Thai style lanterns?? We're working to a tight budget so would love some creative/different ideas. There will be children present. Any ideas???Please...?

If you wanted lanterns these were the cheapest I have found so far

What about doing a quiz about the two of you? A bit like a pub quiz style and then get guests to swop answers to mark them. The winner gets a prize, or do it by table if you have a lot of quests? You could have sheets of photos of the two of you growing up around/on the tables to use as visual prompts, play music from your eras etc.

You could also arrange a treasure hunt, either hiding gifts or chocolates, or tickets and the person with the most tickets wins a prize, great for the kids too.

You could look at having a few fete stalls but this would start turning into an English Fete theme, so it depends what you want really but a coconut shy and a hoopla stall would be fairly easy to sort yourselves or use a company like

The Party Planning Expert website is really good. Am now also planning to give my guests a 'growing gift' as a wedding favour - a small plant pot filled with compost with mixed herb seeds added & the instructions 'water me'. What a novel idea for a wedding favour and it fits with my garden party theme.

Not so sure about the bouncy castle, I have a 6 year old son who'd be bound to break his leg!!

    Thanks for all the help

How about www.coxandcox.co.uk who have things like bunting etc that you can put up around the trees etc?

Sounds like a lovely idea, wish that feb 09 could have the weather to do something like that!

Gutted had just written a massive post! lets hope this works!

Ok, so i was gonna say bunting, and maybe paper laterns in the trees with some LED tealights, you can leave them on for a long time, and they flicker so it looks like there is a real one inside but dont burn the place down.

Also maybe ask a local ice cream van to pop around, people normally love the sound of an ice cream van and the kids will go mad.. can you imagine some of your photos as well... .

And the kids soo have to have bubbles, you know the massive ones you can get... where they are going mad because they are huge! cant find a link, but if i find one shall post you a link...

    Hi,
You would still have to serve some drinks and something to nibble on till late evening.
People tend to get hungry you know!!!!
A lovely romantic setting could be lanterns, covered tealights, hanging christmas lights, floating tealights in water etc. with soft music in the background and all sorts of activities going on tailored to your guests

We're getting married at Whirlowbrook Hall in Sheffield. The grounds are open to the public but on a weekday it's never very busy and there are enough 'bits' to the garden that we shall just take over one area & hopefully anyone there will give us a wide berth.
We're having a string quartet for an hour after the ceremony & have goodie bags for the kids, with bubbles in them along with a snack & duck food!! We have small toy figures for the boys (whilst we have the meal) - they're great, they were reduced to a £1 for 2 at a gadget shop!
    We're also having a few disposable camera's.
To get over the 'nibbles' later we're having a two tier cake. the bottom will be chocolate & eaten as dessert but the top will be fruit & will be served around 8pm with drinks.
Now I've told you all I'm getting quite excited..100 days to go?

Glad to be able to help, also ❤️❤️❤️ the icecream van idea! Arrange to pay him about £50 and let guests have an icecream cone later in the afternoon!

Some of the chocolate fountain companies do the old fashioned style ice cream man and carts and popcorn or candy floss carts but think these are quite expensive.
