Garters?

FelicityChaplin, 23 January, 2010 at 11:24 Posted on Planning 0 22

Is everyone wearing one?

I really don't understand why/what their importance is, so if someone could fill me in that would be great!

Also, I'm not wearing anything blue on my wedding day. Is this important? (I don't understand a lot of traditions, sorry)

A lot of brides wear a blue garter as their something blue.

I dont know a lot about traditions either but its meant to be good luck to have with you on the day something old something new something borrowed and something blue.

    hth xx

Its part of the 'something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a silver sixpence in your shoe' tradition. If i remember correctly the blue represents your purity (each part of the rhyme represents something, eg old = the old life your leaving behind etc). Hope this helps. I've got it all in a book somewhere someone gave me for our engagement, though this is what i remember off the top of my head so may not be entirely correct lol, but i think it is! xx

I don't really know why a garter is involved in the old, new, borrowed & blue tradition but Ive got a blue & white one.

Wow Mrs Tonner I adore that! ??

I'm having an alternative wedding so something along those lines would be so great.

Must admit I'm not a huge fan of the colour blue, and my dress is ivory and emerald green, so it would clash somewhat.
I know no one will see it, but I know it's there!

Wow i would love to know more about your wedding!!! Not because I'm nosy but because we're having a bit of an alternative wedding too!

I have a princess dress which i love but underneath i fancied something a bit different hehe Smiley laugh

Our wedding started out as a full on white and black Gothic affair but now it's black, red and purple! My H2B is a metal head and I'm a bit of a hippy so we thought we'd mix the two together Smiley laugh

A lot of garters are white or ivory with a tiny blue bow stitched on the inside.

Your dress sounds gorgeous - I love emerald green and ivory together.

    No problem! ?

I'm a bit of an old skool rocker/metal-head/goth, and also a Pagan so we're just having a simple registry office wedding with the view to have a hand-fasting ceremony afterward.
Then in the evening we're just off to a Chicago Rock style venue where we're having a buffet and DJ.

We're having our own music at the venue as we definitely don't want any chart tat or novelty rubbish! And everything is going to decorated in ivy garlands, LED tea lights, and emerald, silver and ivory accessories. (Rose petals, table gems, balloons, etc.)

As OH is from Scotland I'm going to be wearing silver Celtic jewelry and he's wearing traditional dress. (Can't wait for that!?)

I'm having one of those hand-made pagan/medieval/gothic style velvet gowns from eBay and a dress-head made with silk ivy leaves and ivory flowers.

Haven't got any pictures as yet, but I will definitely start flashing when I have!

    That sounds amazing!

We're going for the big church wedding, using our VW van as transport Smiley laugh our daughter Seren is having a wand in the shape of a star (Seren is welsh for star)

I'm decorating everywhere with candles and mirror tiles with vases of purple and red flowers. The top table is having music note confetti and purple crystals Smiley laugh

We started writing a list of songs we wanted but stopped once we got up to page four haha!!

I can't wait to see your flashes!! xx

That sounds really awesome, and VW's are just fab!

I love hearing about something different.
I thought I was the only person on here having something a bit non-traditional!

    A beige suit? Smiley amazing

I'm trying not to think about what our families may wear. It's too cringe worthy.
Probably going to see a lot of stuffy hats though...

And I'm not having bridesmaids because basically none of them wanted to wear medieval gowns, so stuff them really. ?

OMG I WOULD HAVE JUMPED AT THE CHANCE TO WEAR A MEDIEVAL GOWN!!!!

    Crazy people!

My BM wants to wear converse under her dress lol, might get my daughter some little white ones too, she'll be 13 months so probably the safer option!

I can't wait for it all to come together Smiley laugh

Converse are great, and I think would look adorable on your little one!

I can't wait either, and if it wasn't for money restrictions I'd have everything ready right now!
We only decided to get married at New Years after about a years engagement so I think I'm moving pretty swiftly with my planning!

Just one little thing on the garters- I believe in America taking the garter off the bride is part of the ceremony and is then thrown to the men at the wedding party to catch like the bride throws her bouquet. Not sure if that applies over here.

    This is mine https://www.silkgarters.co.uk/french-lace-designer-wedding-garter-89-p

I bought it as I thought that it was tradition but obviously not being too traditional as I couldn't see any ivory/blue ones that I likes so I have decided to go for a blue ribbon round my bouquet ?
