George, coffee, didn't want to derail thread

Headless Lois, 27 January, 2009 at 11:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

Something Cherry Valance put has made me think - I do tend to find an ad with a big star less believable somehow than ads where they've used regular, unrecognisable actors. It's just harder to imagine George actually getting his own coffee, using weird pod things I think.
It's like when actresses are on hair dye ads - so unbelievable that they don't spend a fortune at the hairdressers, but lean over the sink and diy like normal folk

I agree with you as well, I can't imagine Davina McCall or Penolope Cruz getting their hands all dirty with a L'oreal home hair dye ?

I completely agree re hair dye, but I'm not sure I do re coffee. Imagine what a hassle it would be to have to ask someone else every time you wanted coffee, rather than just getting it yourself?

I love the small print on the dye ads - 'So and so was styled with natural extensions coloured with X' ?

Oh and mascara ads that state 'enhanced in post-production' ?

I'm with you Lois, ads with slebs are even less believable than the usual guff

I think I get that George must get his own coffee at home, but the ad isn't at home it's very officey and it just seems weird and false. I think because I don't understand why he's there, what the office is.

those mascara ads really get me. They use false lashes, ad to it all afterwards, they get ever more ridiculous. I am sure the models wouldn't be able to open their eyes under the weight of those lashes

I also completely agree. Like Eva Longoria Parker uses creme conditioning gloss or whatever. I also think it smacks a bit of desperation (? probably not the right word but brain is frozen) by the actors- in particular the coffee one for some reason. Again, agree with Cherry Valance that it's the kind of ad you would expect to see on Chris Tarrant where everyone laughs at the Beckhams for advrtising condoms or the like in Japan.

Apparently even though the davina ads had her chirping on to 'mum' about her fab hair colour, irl they didn't get on and had a very strained relationship. which just adds to the realism of it all.

davina's mum has died fairly recently so now the ads just have her talking to a seemingly imaginary friend...

It's true, I think it's because you recognise the 'star' be it George Clooney or whoever as being themselves whereas with other less famous actors for example Kris Marshall playing the part he does in the ads for BT although you know his face you can see him as the character and not as himself. To me this helps me to accept that it is a plausible situation whereas the coffee ad works diffierently and relies very heavily on the George Clooney star element which seems a bit ridiculous as surely he'd have some assistant or another to get coffee for him wouldn't he?

? at Zebra (on original thread). I was going to get a coffee machine (not pods as it happens but little sachets, similar thing though) for the studio and decided that people who like proper coffee wouldn't appreciate it, so they can live with instant until I get a bean to cup machine

God, is it Davina in those ads? I'm an embarrassment, I really am.

Yes I agree about the big stars, if it's something that I don't think they'd actually use then I don't believe the advert. Mind you, I don't believe most adverts and I love to watch for the small print that contradicts the main message. A while back there was a pizza brand (can't remember the specific names/details now) that promoted itself as traditionally Italian "like mama used to make" and in the small print it said something like "Made and shipped from Slough".?
