Getting a bit carried away on the DIY front. Any crafty people around to advise?

Arquard, 29 March, 2011 at 10:24 Posted on Planning 0 8

Right. Table plans. I'm in awe of the one RainbowFlorist posted from her daughter's wedding and have been thinking about how we're going to make ours.

What I wanted is a nice pearlescent dark blue (as close as possible to the LapisLazuli Stardream card we used in the invitations), A1 size on something like foam board or very thick strong card. I haven't gotten any further than that for now because THAT much is doing my head in.

I can find white and black foam board, A1 matte card in varying colours and smaller sheets of the Stardream stuff. But not the perfect combination of all the elements required unless I pay £70-odd to have one custom made. Not an effing chance! I'll do it myself!

So.

Would it work if I got a plain white foamboard, stuck a sheet of A1 dark blue card to it (somehow, don't know how yet) and sprayed the lot with pearlescent painty stuff to make it spangly?

I've seen this spray paint on eBay but it doesn't say if you can (or can't) use it on card/foamboard: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Plastikote-Spray-Paint-400ml-Pearl-Touch_W0QQitemZ140369192920QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=221609774465&rvr_id=221609774465&cguid=8a50de6012c0a0aad372af22fdfd6214

Hiya. The spray paint should be fine on there. I'd do a few practices first though cos it can be surprisingly difficult to get it to look good. To stick the card to the foamboard I'd use spray mount as it'll stick it firmly without crinkling. Could it work if you used the dark blue card and then touches of the sparkly card in places?

Yeah that could work too. I'm going to order two sheets of the A1 matte dark blue card and then trial one with the spray paint. I've seen some glittery spray paint too that does say it's fine for card so might go for that. If the trial doesn't work, I'll stick with the matte blue and use the sparkly stuff as backing mounts maybe? Dunno. Cross that bridge when I get to it!!!

Wwwcraftcreations.co.uk sell Stardream Lapislazuli in single sheets up to 510 x 720mm (just under A1 size) for a few pounds and you can buy 10 mm foam-core board with a self adhesive peel off sheet so you won't need to buy additional Spray Mount (which is around £10 a can). I've seen it in Hobby Craft and good art shops.

Alternatively you could buy a stretched canvas and paint it directly.

    ? I'm struggling.

Sticking the matte card to the foam board didn't go tooooooo well. It ended up with airbubbles underneath and didn't stick at the edges. It may be rescue-able but I'm rapidly running out of time and patience. In the end, I've ordered 2 of the 510mm x 720mm sheets of stardream card as PrettyWild suggested (one to keep as a back-up in case I bugger up again!) but now I'm not sure how to strengthen the whole thing so it stays upright and sturdy on the day.

What on earth do most people use???

Hi, I'm half way through doing my table plan and it's A1 size. Is your card mount card, it shouldn't get airbubbles that you can see if it is thick enough. And if the mount card and foam board are thick enough it should be sturdy.

I used some craft glue called Hi-Tac, mine stuck together no problem and no gaps along the edges.

By the time it's done it'll have been a lot of hard work but will have only cost me £20 to make instead of about £100 (and I have to admit it's looking as pretty darn good as a professional).

It was just bog standard card so I don't think it was thick enough. I could try sticking the Stardream stuff on instead but would rather not because the foam board is A1 size and the Stardream card is slightly smaller.

How about white or cream mount card, then stick the Stardream card on, the mount card will make it sturdy enough plus will double as a border. x
