getting married in a registry office???????

katiesteed87, 7 September, 2010 at 00:02 Posted on Planning 0 2

Hi all, I got engaged on mothers day this year and my partner and I are planning on getting married November 3rd 2011 in our local registry office, the only problem is that my partner doesn't have any I.D. He was born in Canada to British parents and has lived back in the UK for over 20 years, but at some point during the move his parents managed to lose his birth certificate (he came across on his mums passport) and they never bothered to replace it at the time. We are currently getting his birth certificate but we were told by the registrar that we would need some kind of photo I.D....forking out for a passport/driving licence is not a hit that our wedding budget can really take (unless it has to) is there anything else that we can use?? Citizen card etc Please help Katie

Omg, how complicated! I am sorry i have no idea. Coz i never meet this kind os thing. But i believe the time is enough for you to do it before your wedding.

I think you have better ask Professionals.

As far as I was aware people born outside the UK also had to show their passport as ID, but I may be wrong.

The best bet is to ring your local registrar and check what forms of ID are required for giving notice, as it sometimes varies from district to district xxx

First of all you need to ascertain your fiance's nationality. He was born in Canada but with British parents so he could be British or Canadian. You say he has a citizen card - is this Canadian as the UK don't have id cards mostly? This has an effect on how you are able to give notice. Telephone the UKBA on **** and they should be able to help him.

If he turns out to be Canadian he needs to obtain a Certificate of Approval from the Home Office or Indefinite Leave to Remain or Right of Abode. If he is Canadian he may already have ILR or Right of Abode because of his parents in which case he should get that in writing.

The UKBA above can help re this.

It shouldn't be necessary for you to have to provide photo id. Advise your local register office that he does not have photo id and ask what alternative documents they will accept.
