Getting married in the UK or abroad??

Mrs Morris to be, 2 January, 2013 at 12:45 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 8

I got engaged on Christmas Day and am desperately trying to decide where to get married. I love the idea of a beach wedding somewhere hot and tropical but i'd also like a to get married in England in a stately home or something like that. The main problem getting married abroad is that I don't have a clue where to start and some of my family (mainly older relatives) wouldn't be able to come, however if i get married at home I can imagine the cost being horrific!

I'm based in Kent near Sevenoaks so am looking for venues not too far from home.

Can anybody give some advise please?

Thank you.

Hayley

I think you probably need to figure out what guests you really cant imagine your day without and that will help you decide if you want to stay here or go abroad. I am going abroad, to Santorini and including the holiday its costing me around 7,000 for 22 guests, thats including everything plus extras such as fireworks, free bar etc... but then Santorini was one of the dear options of the greek islands - but totally worth it in my opinion, i just think abroad gets you more for your money, great weather and the locations are gorgeous. xx xx

Your wedding sounds lovely! I am of the same opinion of you with value for money and weather etc, I also love the beautiful scenery. If you dont mind me asking what does your 7,000 include for your guests, flights, accommodation, food & drinks?? We've just made a rough list of people to invite to the day and evening and it's looking like 100 for the day and 20+ evening guests so likely to be costly over here. Did you book with a travel agent or do bits yourself? x

Good Morning and congratulations on your engagement!

I had this same dilemma, I thought I had my heart set on the big white wedding here at home. OH was very clever or very lucky lol, as we were due to go on holiday to Rhodes and he popped the question 3 weeks before (was gonna do it while we were away but couldn't wait). I researched places in UK before we went and got various quotes however once we were out there I turned to OH about 3 days in and said I love this place how nice would be to get married here he just grinned, I think thats what he wanted all along but wanted me to be happy.

We have now booked our wedding at St Pauls Chapel in Lindos, reception in pefkos Sep 2015. In terms of costing yes I do believe its going to be loads cheaper plus you get to have two weeks wedding instead of one day :-)

We have gone through an agency based in Rhodes for the wedding and then we plan to book the holiday through a travel agent. We did it this way as our guests are paying to travel so I think its only fair they get to pick their own hotel and how long they wish to come for.

Hope that helps and happy planning

    Hi Gem,
Thanks very much for your reply that has helped loads.
How many guests do you have coming to your wedding? Greece does seem to be quite a popular place to get married (especially on this site) which is pretty encouraging. It's definitely a location that I am considering.
The thing i'm having trouble getting started with is who to contact in this country for pricing and such like. Did you find agencies on the internet? I have a booklet for Kuoni but they seems quite expensive! x

    Hi,

    thanks Smiley smile,

ive gone with Ionian weddings, they have been fantastic, they do weddings on all the greek islands. The 7000 covers 2 weeks in santorini for me and OH, planner fee's, ceremony and reception hire fee's (reception is from 8-2) inclu. Decorations, DJ, BBQ buffet, all inclusive drinks, transport from hotel to ceremony, then to reception, firework display, flowers, bridal hair and make up, wedding cake, chairs with chair covers.

If you look on Ionian weddings website its really helpful, they have so many options on all the different islands. Xxxx

    Good evening ladies,

Your wedding sounds lovely and your package seems very reasonable. Santorini looks beautiful (i've just goggled it ? )

We did ours through happily ever after, based on feedback we got through a couple that were getting married while we were on holiday over there. We are inviting 40 guests, unsure as to if all will go but thats what we are going to base our costs on, don't want any nasty surprises.

    Includes:

 Dealing with all arrangements prior to and on the wedding day

 Use of our wedding co-ordinator leading up to the big day as well as on the day itself

 Translation of all standard legal documents*

. A personal consultation before your marriage.

 All fees associated with your marriage license in Greece. Security for the chosen time and date of your ceremony.

 Acting as witness if required for your wedding.

 Ice cold water for guests at the chapel.

     Brides bouquet

     Grooms buttonhole

     One bridesmaid bouquet

 Arrangement for translating your Greek wedding certificate into English (Optional Extra)

     Photographer at ceremony

     30 prints

     50 photographs on a disc

 Year round e-mail support as required

     All local taxes

    All this for 1250 euros.

Sorry its so long I copied and pasted, I sat down tonight with OH and we think its all going to come to around 7000 for everything including 2 weeks away and the reception (which we have booked separately) including food and wine etc. This also includes the dj, greek dancers and a champagne boat cruise from St Pauls back to Pefkos.

Sorry I've written an essay ?

    Hi Gem,

Thanks so much for the reply. It's helped me loads and loads! It really does sound lovely, I am definitely going to enquire with your company you booked with to see what sort of price i'd be looking at.

Looks like you're £7,000 covers pretty much everything, from what I've seen of UK weddings I think i'd be looking at double that to get married which is crazy!. I'm still looking at some venues over here just to make sure we're making the right decision for us to go abroad.

I'm living in hope of the Euro Millions win!!

Thanks ladies for all your help

    Hayley x

We married on Zanzibar through Zanzibar Weddings. Much cheaper than here, and much more intimate, but we decided not to invite any guests at all, and make up for that with a UK reception.

I too got engaged at Christmas and we think it will be in 2015 sometime before our wedding and we too are wondering about doing it abroad in Cyprus.

My friends got married last year and used a company called Marry in Cyprus, they were very good and nothing was too much trouble.

The cost was around 4500 Euros and she had 30 guests and stayed in the Protaras area, which is on the East Coast, in June 2012.

She had everything including hair, make up, video, photographs plus sunset ones and arrived in a cream Bentley which looked amazing she also had a Greek meze which was so much food it was almost too much lol and the DJ and Greek dancers were excellent.
