getting married on our own

runawaybride2011, 6 July, 2011 at 11:03 Posted on Planning 0 7

Has anyone just gone off and got married without having all their friends and family there? we have a really small budget, a large complicated family and 3 young children. we really like the idea of just finding a registry office somewhere and asking 2 strangers to be our witnesses but i'm really worried we wouldn't be able to find anyone to do it and the wedding wouldn't be able to go ahead. H2B is not keen on gretna green and it's a long way from where we live. Anyone got any ideas?

As far as know Gretna isn't exactly the cheap alternative nowadays, think they've hiked up the prices and it's gone quite touristy!! Could you not just have the two sets of parents there, and maybe have the 2 mum's as your witness's? xx

I'm sure you could find witnesses. Could you maybe ask a best friend each to be there?

I saw a wedding featured in a blog once where it was really small... nobody except the bride and groom, and their witnesses were their photographer and someone else who was a supplier... I can't remember who, maybe someone playing a musical instrument at the ceremony. I think they then went off and met their immediate families for a small meal but I can't remember, sorry!

Don't forget as well that you can't just turn up at a register office and get married. You must go to give notice, and when you do that you must specify the date, time and location. You must then wait 10 days before you can get married.

When we were looking for venues we saw the Saddleworth Hotel (Gorgeous in MCR) and they had a couple getting married there that afternoon, just the two of them and the hotel manager and the duty manager were their witnesses, I'm sure if you found a perfect location staff would love to be a part of your day.

Given the @rse of sorting a wedding, I am jealous...

we were tempted by this and really wish we had done it now.

I think it's romantic. GGreen may not be as cheap as it once was, but if you are having no-one there then it will be a fraction of the price of most weddings.
