Getting ready photos

Are they necessary? Will they be missed? We have a meeting with a photographer tonight and these are the questions I'm asking myself. We have a meeting with a photographer tonight and these are the questions I'm asking myself. H2b will say, 'no, whatever is cheapest', but I have always loved looking at them on line and imagined that I would have them if I ever got married. Now I'm thinking though that if I could still get beautiful photos of the day, but for a better price and not include the getting ready shots this would be ok. I'm sure my friends could capture them on their cameras and whilst I appreciate it's not quite the same, at least it would be captured. It's the photos of the 'day' itself that are most important.

Any OM have any advice? What is everyone else doing?

Ah best change my avatar I think.
I find it can be a good opportunity to show detail in the dress that you just cannot see when it is on, you just have to use your creativity a little bit, or I might just be inspired by the way the light is hitting the dress so its not usually just a random straight forward shot of it hanging up for the sake of it.

Hmm I'd never thought of this but I can see what you mean. Bill - I never realised your avatar was a dress until now!

We'll be half ready by the time our TOG gets there (as we wanted her the slightly later in the evening to catch more party shots). Most of us will already have hair and make up done etc so it will be the very end of getting ready but I thought it was nice to have shots of me and my Mum and BMs before everything gets hectic!

I specifically didn't want our photographer taking photos of me getting ready - party because it saved money but mainly because I think I would have felt uncomfortable and knew that it'd probably be stressful enough on the morning of the wedding! I don't regret my decision at all, I took photos of my dress etc myself, and my bridesmaids took a couple of snaps too. You spend enough time on your wedding day posing for photos, it's nice to not have spent the whole morning doing it too!

That said, some of the pics people have put on here are lovely!

Although its being called getting ready I dont take any people shots really until right at the end so you still look good in the photos. I may get one or two early on but not loads in curlers. And those faces you pull when you put on makeup are not good? But then when you are all ready I can get some of everyone who is there before it gets-- as you say hectic !.

And there dosent have to be any posing that is done also one shot can show lots of things.

To be honest, avatars are so small I hadn't realised exactly what it was Bill......It is a nice shot. Was it naturally there or something you created???

Ah I see perhaps its much smaller on ipads and phones but I use a big screen for editing so didnt notice.

The light is not what the camera saw but it is how I saw it so with some tweaks in photoshop I put back what the camera couldnt do. I might of pushed it to the centre of the window before I took the picture

This, it's quite hard to see if you're quickly glancing at it, especially as I'm often using my phone, I didn't really pay too much attention to it but it looks a little bit like some kind of stained glass window at quick glance.

I really wasn't keen on the idea of having prep photos and so wouldn't have opted for it if it was an additional cost but our tog charges the same price no matter how long he is there and so this is just included. I have told him that I wasn't keen on the idea of having photos of make-up-less me in my album (although I'm sure everyone would have a good laugh looking at the ugly duckling turn into the swan ?) and that I feared the room would become overcrowded if there was 4 of us trying to have our hair and make up done, the mua and tog. Based on this he has agreed to take a couple of photos of us all sipping our fizz whilst our hairs being done (make-up will be finished), photos of dress/shoes etc before they're put on, then he'll take some photos of the boys whilst I'm finishing getting ready and then he'll be back to photograph Mum and Dads first reaction (more Dad then Mum as she'll be having her hair and make-up done too. X

I love bridal prep, I see it as a. a chance to be more creative, b. a chance to get a shot of the bride before all the makeup gets cried off and c. an intimate time for her and her wedding party- I find it's usually when people start to get emotional and full of anticipation. Stuff like the bridesmaid breaking down whilst the dress goes on

    Or something a bit creative

(How does everyone get around the squashy thing??!)

Personally I want to have the getting ready photos! I don't want my album to be swarmed with them, just to have a few, I would much rather have 'the day' to be the biggest part. I would like h2b to have a couple, but not sure if he would go for it lol!!

No offence meant Bill! I did close my post with "personal opinion" - I've seen one or two gorgeous ones, as you demo, but they're few and far between. I had the same problem when I went dress shopping and gave up looking at things on the hanger in too much detail, for fear I might take against them, and just tried loads on.

And like others I had thought your avatar was a bride in dress in front of window I must confess.

I think thats close enough. If most people look via their phones then the avatars are a bit pointless I supose. I was thinking that most people view the forum 9-5 via a work PC and so would be bigger and thats why I was ? when it was said people did not know what it was ----- I used a thingy--- I used a thingy?

I would say that 80% of the albums we do for weddings include some 'getting ready' photos.

The informality of those (normally lighthearted) photos provides a nice contrast with the photos that follow on from them.

    Best Regards

    Marc
