Getting rid of bamboo

Alexm, 15 August, 2009 at 20:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

Hi, skipped across from BT so hope you don't mind me posting ?

We have bamboo in the garden and want to get rid of it which I understand is REALLY difficult. Does anyone have any experience / knowledge about how best to go about it?

TIA

My OH did it for my mum. It took him ages. Its seriously hard work so he earned some big brownie points (so chose the right moment to ask my mum if he could marry me!) He used a pick axe. Slammed it down and dug up.

    Good luck!

My PIL have a lot of bamboo in their house in France. It is very difficult to destroy.

I cut back a huge amount (leaving little stumps) 4 years ago and the stumps are still there! I'm not sure if weed killer works. I've heard that it takes something rediculous like 100 years for bamboo to die ?

    I'm not helping much am I? ?

I guess the best thing to do is cut it back and keep cutting it back. If anyone else knows how to get rid of it, please let me know as I will earn some much needed brownie points with my MIL !!

Thanks for the advice, I am getting the impression that it is virtually impossible to either contain or destroy. Why on earth would you plant it in the first place I wonder?! Well best get back to digging then!

Dig up as much as you can and just keep on top of it when it starts shooting again. We've just bought a big water tank to put ours in!
