Gift list not with one store?

milna, 2 September, 2008 at 20:24 Posted on Planning 0 4

Dont really fancy the idea of traipsing round debenhams selecting masses of things that we don't really want/need but are selecting for the sake of having a nice big wedding list.

What I'd rather do is make a list of all the things big and small we DO need from all sorts of different places that we would hope/intend to buy for ourselves at some point. We have seen various things for house and garden in different places, we could also add more 'unusual' type gifts - such as nice new things for our horse or walking/surfing/mountain biking things that friends who know us through those hobbies may prefer to buy as an alternative to towls and plates.

How would one administer such a list? Has anyone done it? I was thinking just a list of item, shop (with phone no/address/website) and price - and then maybe make it available 'on request' - maybe from my mother? And ask people to let her know what they intend to buy so that she can cross it off the list? Would this work? Or would it end up being a shambles with 3 or 4 people each buying us the same thing? ?

This was, I believe, the way gift lists used to work before department stores spotted the market of cornering a couples entire gift list for themselves?

Our friends had things they wanted from different stores and they left the list with the brides mother and included a not about this in the invites. It worked really well too.

My friends did this and it worked fine. My other friend sent out a pad on request which had the items written on different pages and people tore out the page with what they were going to buy, which meant the guests didn't have to tell anyone what they were going to buy so how much they were spending which I thought was such a considerate thing to do! And also meant that people had fun looking through the book!

I think it could work as long as you have someone happy to "admin" it and you make it clear on your info sheet that it's the plan - or make sure your Mum is clear when people contact her. She would either need to send it to everyone who asked or ask them questions to ascertain what they could buy from it e.g. price, sort of gift etc. Guests could also get hit with expensive delivery charges which some wedding list suppliers waive e.g. John Lewis.

This is what my parents did when they got married (27 years ago!). They got a notebook and wrote a different thing on each page, then people tore out the page of what they wanted to buy (or told my nan what they were going to get and she tore it out for them if it was over the phone). It worked fine - my mum and dad still have lots of the lovely things they were given. I think as long as you have someone happy to administer it, it'll work really well.

We have a list at www.whattogive.com it's free to use & you can link to any shop online or ask for donations to bigger items. It's basically just a wish list & people must promise the item & then arrange to purchase it themselves. It's clearly explained although a few people have had a couple of problems (but they've figured it out once they've read the site properly!)
