We're getting married in December 2010 and we're going to give notice in two weeks time. i believe you can't give notice more than a year in advance, but I see from your ticker that you've got 8 months - have you held your date with the registrar? When we reserved the date we were told we'd have a month to give notice and that the fee at this stage is £30 each.

Oh - actually - ignore everything I've said! Sorry, I didn't twig it was a minister marrying you. In which case, I have no idea, sorry!

Are you getting married in a church? If you are, you don't need to give notice, the minister sorts it all out for you.

I think you do have to give notice at the registry office even if you are getting married in church, I say that becuase my brother has just got married in church and he had to do it!

Ooh not sure about that then, probably best to have a word with the minister.

Mel B, I think it depends on the type of church. Roman Catholic priests are not authorised to officially marry a couple so a registrar is still needed. We are getting married in a CoE church and vicars are authorised so no notice required . . . or so I've been told, I hope its right!

I'd suggest mabe giving your local register office a quick call and ask them. Better to be safe than sorry!

This whole part of the WP process confuses me! So can you only reserve the date with a registrar and then when you give notice it is confirmed? If this is the case I am going to reserve my date in the next few weeks but can't give notice for ages because you can't give notice until a year before the wedding date. Is that right???? Confused.com!!!!

    Hi

You need to ring the local registry office in your area or the area you are getting married - the local county council and speak to the registry dept - same for ministers. You can provisionally book over a year in advance, we have, even though they say different on the website! Bear in mind if your getting married outside your area might be more complex.

Call them and check they are free on the date as they well might not be so watch paying a deposit before checking with the minister. Often they can only do one ceremony a day or at set times. So check the date and provisionally book, then I think you can confirm a year in advance. With a registrar there are some forms you have to fill out and yes you do have to pay - less for a minister than a registrar.

The minister will inform you what else you need to do!

    Hope this helps.
