If you're having a civil ceremony, or getting married in (I think) any church other than the Church of England, then you need to "give notice of marriage" to your local registration office - this is the office for the area where you live, NOT where you are going to get married. This essentially involves them checking your ID, asking a few questions about each other (it varies whether they do this with the two of you together or separately) to make sure that you are legally allowed to marry. They then post a notice in their office for 15 days, during which anyone who wants to register an objection to your marriage can do so. After that, you get given a piece of paper which "authorises" your marriage, which you have to deliver to the registry office where you're getting married.

If you are getting married in a CofE church then you don't need to worry about this - they go through a similar process by reading the banns.

This page explains what needs to be done https://www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-partnerships/overview

WSS! They said bring 2 utility bills with my name and address on but everything is in Oh's name. Only thing I can find is our mortgage agreement and a letter from British Gas so I hope they'll be OK. Have passport and drivers liscence too.

Thanks - that is what i thought it was but I got confused cos everyone had like 8 months to go and stuff, we got told we had to do it 3 months to 2 weeks before our wedding so thats how I was confused, but maybes the law is different for Scotland ?

I think it is different - in England you can give notice up to a year beforehand, and quite often it's hard to get appointments at the registry office so people do it quite far in advance.

I got told one utility bill/proof of address and because we do everything online or by direct debit all I have is the tenancy agreement for the flat! You've got me worried now. ?

We had to go and pick it up and send it to the registry office where we're getting married - they wouldn't do it for us for some reason. If you're getting married in the same district as you live in, this doesn't need doing, but if you're getting married somewhere else it's probably worth calling your "home" registry office to check if you need to do anything more.

It varies a little depending on where you go but it shouldn't be scary or difficult. They will want to know both of your full names, dates of birth, occupations and nationality (if you're both born in Britain this is easy). We then got asked for our fathers' names and occupations. Some places keep you together for some questions and then separate you to ask other questions - I guess to check that you do actually know the person you're marrying and it's not a sham marriage. As long as you've got the documents they've told you there shouldn't be a problem.

They will also want to know the date, time and place of your wedding.

Good luck, don't stress too much!

Just got back, it was fine, the lady was really friendly with me and chatted about my job. The only thing was I didn't know my dad's occupation before he died so apparently I have to let Staffs registrars know as it goes on the marriage certificate. I find it really weird that my dad's job goes on something that is nothing at all to do with it! Also I don't know OH's proper job title either. Oops. OH doing his later. Then in about 3 weeks we have to go and pick up a document and then send that off to Staffordshire area registrar.
