Giving notice..

warlycarly, 8 April, 2012 at 19:19 Posted on Planning 0 2

When it come to giving notice (which was next on my to do list) I have read that I need a birth certificate with both parents names, or valid UK passport, but.... I do not know where my birth certificate is, and my passport is out of date, so now i'm wandering, do I have to renew either or both of these or can I use something else? I did change my name a few years ago, so I have the deed poll, I will take that anyway, and my driving licence. But can I take anything else instead of passport and Birth Certificate?

    Hi Warly Carly. I had a look on a website, and it says the following;

    • evidence of identification and current name with photo
    • proof of nationality
    • to produce documentary evidence If you have changed your name otherwise than by marriage,
    • evidence of age – normally passport or birth certificate. If you are under 18, you will probably need to obtain the consent of your parents before notice may be given
    • evidence of residence – to prove that you live at your address. This could be a Council Tax bill, utility bill or bank statement or other similar document.

    I am sure that I took my driving license and a bill with my address, but if you ring the registrar office they will be able to tell you for sure.

    I am also pretty sure I just took my driving license and a bill - but it might have been my passport. Definitely wasn't birth cert as no idea where that is. I would just give them a ring and ask - if it's proof of id then a driving license should be fine as long as it's one with a photo.

    I would ring your local registrar's office & double check - it does make a difference when you were born. If you were born after a date in 1983 (don't know exact date off the top of my head) you have to faff with parent's birth certificates as well.

    If you've lost your birth certificate you can get a copy from the General Register Office www.gro.gov.uk should be with you in about a week.
