Giving notice at registry office for Catholic wedding in a different district

HappyBrownDecor18059, 13 March, 2018 at 15:35 Posted on Planning 0 3

Me and my H2B want to get married in a Catholic church in the town I grew up in, even though we currently live in a different city. I thought it would be pretty straight-forward, both priests (our local one and the one in my home town) have said it's fine, but I just rang our local registry office to try and make an appointment to give notice, and the lady said that because the church we want to get married in is "not our regular place of worship" she can't let us give notice here, and we would both have to go and "set up residence" for 7 days in the district where we plan to get married, and give notice there. She said we could do this by just for example staying with my nan for a week and getting my nan to write a letter confirming we have lived there for 7 days. That is do-able, but still faff, and I don't see why we have to do it - surely we can't be the only people to ever get married in a place that's different from where we currently live?? People do it all the time! According to the woman I spoke to the other option would to be to just sign the form stating that it is our regular place of worship... but that would be an outright lie since my family are actually atheists, it's my H2B who's the catholic and he's from a different place altogether. Has anyone else had this? Is it really the only way to do it? From what she was saying it seems to be specific to Catholic churches, which seems weird and a tad unfair, if it's true.

    The Registrar is correct.

It's not just Catholic churches, it's sikh gurdwaras, Hindu temples, baptist, Methodists, etc etc.

If you want to marry in a non C of E church outside if the district you live, you either have to live in the district for 7.days and nights and give notice in that district OR it has to be one or both of your usual places of worship.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for confirming, that is helpful, I just wanted to check the registrar had it right at it sounded so outlandish!

It's still really annoying as the priest has given his full support and totally understands, so I don't understand why it should be a problem for the registry office when people get married in all sorts of hotels and castles etc. all over the place without having to pretend they live there. But hey ho. It'll be a good excuse to see my nan, I hope she doesn't mind having me for a whole week! ?

We had to do this too! It was added stress that we definitely didn't need.

Unfortunately, we didn't know anyone in the area where we're getting married and had to pay for a hotel for 9 nights. Then on the 10th day we had to have our appointment to give notice... it was all very strict and expensive.

It was such a long time to take off work and have quite limited annual leave especially taking off so much time for the wedding. We couldn't stay the whole time we were there, but did have to pay for it.

Turned out to be a nice break and we got to the know the area where we're getting married really well.

    Hi,

Did you attend this church whilst

you were growing up? Were you baptised there etc?

We are in the same position- getting married in the parish I grew up in which is not where we live now. We gave notice and there were no problems as we explained that it was the church I grew up attending and where I received my sacraments. Had all the paperwork approved with no issues. It shouldn't be made so hard it's crazy!
