Giving notice to Registrar question.....

MrsShark, 16 February, 2011 at 16:41 Posted on Planning 0 5

Hello lovely hitchers,

We are planning to give notice next month for our wedding in September , the only problem is where do we do it?

My OH and I had assumed that we have to do it with the Registrar in Devon where we are getting married but other threads on here indicate that some people have given notice to their local registry office, despite getting married elsewhere....?

I will call the Registrars in Devon who are booked to do our ceremony tomorrow but just thought I would throw it out there as a question....!

Hey MrsShark, we gave notice at our local registry office 2 weeks ago - we're getting married in Lake Garda, Italy. Hope this helps? xx

You have to give notice in the district in which you live, and in which you have lived for at least 7 days.

If you and H2B live in different districts, you have to go to your own district to give notice.

H2B and I already live together in Northamptonshire, so we had to give notice in Northants, but our venue is Warwickshire so the Warwickshire registrars will be doing our ceremony.

I think standard procedure is to give notice to your local registrar ie the registar for the council you pay your taxes to. For example we pay our council tax to Leeds but our registrar is Selby. We gave notice to Leeds Registrar, who informed Selby on our behalf.

Hello, you have to give notice at the registry office where you live.

So we are getting married in Staffs but live in London. We booked the wedding at Staffs they sent us confirmation and told us to give notice in our borough. We made an appointment at the reg office where we live in London to give notice.

When we gave notice (they separated us and asked our details and details of o/h including father's name) they contacted the reg office in Staffs to let them know that this had been done. The reg office in staffs then wrote to us to confirm and sent us a "choices" pack.

We had to go back to the reg office in London to pick up the notice certificates to pass onto the reg office in Staffs (though some places will do this for you).

I think the first step is to contact the place in Devon who will then book you in and tell you what to do next.

    I hope this helps.

We're in a similar situation, I live under Lambeth registry office, she lives under Leatherhead registry office, and we're getting married in a hotel that comes under Ringwood district.

We booked our time and date with Ringwood, I had my interview in Lambeth, she had hers in Leatherhead, the computer matches it all up - and once we had both given notice Ringwood automatically sent us 'the pack' to help us put our service together.

Sounds complicated but really it isn't that bad - nothing to be concerned about as long as you're both legally free to marry each other (ie not still married to someone else, or closely related or whatever)
