Gluten free bread

JK, 4 September, 2008 at 19:05 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Looks like the dietician is going to push hard for us to try my son Lexi gluten-free again, to improve his gut function (I won't horrify/bore you witht he details).

Any road - GF bread, making it at home, in the breadmaker? (I know, I know Nick, but it's vile anyway) Anyone got a bearable recipe? Has to be milk free too, he's dairy intolerant as well <sigh>. I have Dove farms gluten and wheat free flour, is it ok? Is there something better? And does it freeze?

TIA ?

Tilly Floss or PL are your girls here. I believe you can get it on prescription though...

OK - I know it's not the right flour, but here's a recipe on a website that I usually find very good. You can order their products online, or get on prescription. Their breadmaker recipe is dairy free too.

I've checked the Doves farm site, and they don't have a recipe, so that would suggest that it probably won't work.

TBH the 'fresh' bread that you can get these days - not supermarket, but on prescription made by either Juvela or Glutafin - is really not bad at all. And you can freeze it, then just toast it. Much easier I reckon.

Let me know if you need more info on things that taste OK - I reckon Ive bought just about everything available!

Puss has a recipe, she made it for me in her breadmaker and it was passable - far, far better than shop bought, not as heavy.

I'll see if she emailed it to me, and forward to you if she did.

My H is gluten-free and he buys all his bread products in the gluten-free section at Waitrose. He gets sliced bread, muffins, digestive biscuits - even jaffa cakes. And we buy his gluten-free flour there too - we had homemade pizza this week.

This site promotes the Specific Carbohydrate Diet - which is essentially what you're doing being gluten / dairy free, although they probably tackle it slightly differently to your dietician. Anyway, there are some very good recipies for all sorts of things on here: http://www.pecanbread.com/new/recipes1.html

    Thanks very much everyone ?

Boop I might take a copy of the SCD to the dietician - I'll see what she thinks.

We've tried the Juvela G/F loaves in work and they're really not that bad. WE particularly like the crackers though. We can't have them anymore as our gluten-intolerant superviser has left so we never have any prescriptions to fill. Homemade might make it a bt more bearable for a child though. Hope you find a nice recipe!

The recipe I used for C was in the Breadmaker Recipe book and was the Dove Farm one I think. Really easy and as C said passable to eat. Thinking about it I probably still have some of their flour at home, I will dig it out for you if you want.

Spelt is great - but not gluten free AFAIK. It's definitely the way forward if you're wheat free, but not if you're coeliac I don't think.
