I keep finding that I don't see emails people have sent me, especially if they send two without my replying in between. The way Gmail saves messages as strings of conversation rather than individual emails makes this easy to do, I find- if you open a thread and read the most recent message, it then appears to have been read, even if you didn't see or specifically open the preceding email (if that makes sense).

Is it possible to set it up like ordinary email? I'm tempted to change email addresses because I'm so fed up with missing messages. Or am I just a dimwit?

I think this is some sort of bug with gmail, one of my friends emails in particular are a bit hit and miss, sometimes her emails come through with text sometimes they're blank. Always on the interesting ones too ?

I hope you don't mind the crash, KN, but whilst we're on gmail, does anyone know how to set up folders? I'd like to file some of my mails but don't know how to do it.

You don't set up folders as such you set up labels the bonus being you can give things more than one label. Then you just archive it out of your inbox and you can get it again by clicking on the label you gave it on the left hand side.

As for making it like a normal email client i haven't a clue sorry, sometimes i love the conversation thing other times it drives me mad!

Knownowt - sorry, I can't help, but share your frustrations

Folders are dead simple though. They are called labels. Next to the delete button is a drop down menu called "more actions". There is a option under there called new label. select the conversations you want to file, click on the drop down and "new label", then create the label. Each conversation can have more than one label.

What you do is set up labels which I guess is pretty much a folder.

Just click on settings which is at the top on the right, and click on the tab with Labels on it.

If you've labelled things you can select them and archive them. They magically disappear from your inbox and if you want to retrieve them you just click on the label and there they are.
