Good news...

Nephelae, 7 October, 2009 at 13:40 Posted on Planning 0 12

I'm home from work a bit poorly today ☹️ but I'm sure I'll be fine for Friday!! I'm not back at work unil next Tuesday, however, I have a job interview!!! It's in Winchester where my H2B is working and is on the same road as his workplace ? The manager who rang me earlier to tell me they'd like to interview me (despite thinking I'm really over-qualified!) knows about the wedding etc. and said just let them know when I can come down. Not sure what to do...feel really cheeky asking for more time off work as (in my department) we're a small team, also, if I ask for next Friday for example, should I say why I want the time off? I would be taking either holiday or unpaid leave (I work through a temp agency for the council at the moment) but the problem is more the effect of me not being in again on the remaining three members of the team if that makes sense?! That's great! You must be really pleased and good luck for the interview!!

Don't really know what to say about the time off, I think only you can make that decision but I wouldn't want to risk mising out on the opportunity if it was me...

Thank you Jem ? I am really excited especially as I feel I've got this interview all by myself, most jobs I seem to have fallen into by accident lol!! I spoke to my mum and I think I will tell them Monday afternoon and get a train back by myself as my then husband ? will be going back down south on Monday as he has work on Tuesday too. I'll make a list of questions/things to talk about now and then I don't need to (or have time to) think about it until it happens!! Hopefully I'll be feeling all super-confident and glowing from having got married lol!! N x

Congratulations and good luck. I wouldn't tell your current job where you are going, if you can't book it as holiday just say you have a doctors appointment or something and that you will make the time up. Or maybe i'm just a really dishonest person? ?

Thanks moonpig! This way I won't have to tell work a thing - if I get the job I give just a week's notice as I'm a temp - probably one of the only benefits lol! I want to ask a few things like hours of work, salary and outline of duties, do I need to think of things to say to sell myself?!? I've not really done this before!! N x

I'm always careful about who i tell when I go to an interview, because if your employer needs to make someone redundant and they know you are already looking for a job, they may see that as an easy way out and just choose you to be made redundant.

It's good to ask questions about the job in interviews, as it shows that you are truly interested in the job. i would just plan a few things to say, and some answers to the obviouis questions that you might get i.e. Why do you want the job? How is your expereince relelvant to the poisition? etc. etc.

I would also do some research on the company itself. I went to a job interview and they asked me what I knew about the company, I knew absolutely nothing! It was so embarassing!

Those questions are good starting points, thank you!! I had one interview (for a summer job) and I had literally never had an interview ever, I went completely dry when they asked me about myself - one of the most embarassing moments of my life ? Don't think I'll have that trouble, now, but researching the company is definitely a good idea.

I've only told my parents and my OH. If I start telling friends it will somehow get to work or even if it doesn't I'd feel worse for not getting it if everyone knew. The reason for not telling work is I don't want them to chuck me out before I've found something to go to!! I'm only a temp and joined on a two month contract in February and I'm still there!! The danger is they will redeploy permanant staff who have jobs in a department that has been got rid of or down-sized.

Going to phone the company now to arrange interview for Monday yay! N x

Congratulations on your interview! As other people have said, I wouldn't mention the reason for having some time off either. I was a temp during my gap year and it's a real pain always worrying. Especially since i wasn't planning to run off and go travelling anywhere, i just wanted to save some money up!

Best of luck for Monday! I've come out with some classics during interviews. The last one i had the ,manager (called Ben) introduced himself and my response was 'I'm Jen, hey that rhymes!' *cringe*

Thank you jandr and ? cue embarassing silence I bet! I'm really good at keeping secrets at work - only my manager, my best work friend and the other guy on our team know I'm getting married this weekend ? although my manager sounded like he forgot when I phoned in sick this morning and asked when I'd be back ie. would I be in tomorrow lol! Wow that's some good secret keeping skills you have there! Yes, it was a bit awkward, he gave me the job though! We're quite good friends now too.

Aw that's good ? that is the kind of thing I would say too N x ps. secret keeping largely due to difficult colleague and that there is soooo much office politics I'd rather keep myself to myself - best work friend is the same, she's married but people assume she just has a bf and said colleague thinks she lives with her mum lol! x

Good luck with the interview!! and yeah why not get time off work if its a job you really want to go for?

I feel guilty about having time off within my small team (which is like, never) but none of the team care about what I think when they go sick (they take in turns i think)!!

    Knock em dead!!

in terms of preparing for an interview, i would take a look at the job description (or at least think about the job you are going to be doing), judge what the most important qualities are for the job, and how you meet those. for example, i was recruiting recently for an admin role in a hospital, so the most important things for me was for the candidate to show how they dealt with customers/patients, how they had successfully worked in a team, what they had done individually to improve admin processes etc etc.

i had to score people on the examples they gave - it's all very well saying 'i work well within a team' but you need to back it up with an example of how.

and don't tell people where you are going. and good luck!
