Got my PhD!!! I'm a Dr!!!

Dr Svensk Tiger, 7 April, 2008 at 12:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 78

Just a quick self-indulgent post to say that after 4+ long years of hard work I had my viva last week and passed with just a month of minor corrections, most of which I've finished already ?

I'm so very happy and would like to thank Hitched for helping me retain sanity and reason and giving me many opportunities for procrastination (maybe I would have finished earlier without it though ?).

<musing>Maybe I should add Dr to my username? </musing>

Ps. Apologies for the over-use of !!!, I'm still very bouncy.

Thanks everyone. We went out Friday night and drank the bar dry had one or two small beverages. I felt so ill Saturday, I am far too old for this ?

P&P - I can't even begin to describe the relief, in the darkest days of writing up I honestly thought I would never see the end of it. But it turned out great, just need a job now ?

    Well done!

You have GOT to change your user name to Dr Tiger (for today at least!)?

Orly Bird - that's a good question, I think I will have to be Dr Svensk as I think there is a Dr Tigger on BT and that's a bit too close. I could go with Dr S. Tiger though. Can we still change our names whenever we want?

CBH - that's an even better question ? I am currently looking for academic jobs but it seems that vertebrate palaeontologists/evolutionary biologists aren't exactly in demand. Can't think why. I think I might have to apply for grants and try to land myself a fellowship somewhere.

Funnily enough I did my masters at Bristol and it would be a great place for me to do a post-doc!

    Congratulations! ?

Get thee to the bank and change your name on all your cards. It makes having no money feel far more worthwhile.

How long was your viva? I've heard some horror stories lately about 6 and 9 hour marathons.

I've heard stories like that too. Mine was a breeze in comparison, I was out in 2.5 hours and it was really quite a positive experience. Really relaxed and lots of jokes and laughing (possibly aimed at my thesis ?).

Love the bank idea. I might be a skint but I'm a skint Dr! Not sure if they'll let me though until I have my actual degree certificate? Anyone know?

Now make sure you get those corrections done and handed in, I took a year owing to appalling lack of motivation [:I]

My bank accepted my pass list letter as evidence, which was pretty handy as I would have had to wait 6 months to get my certificate.

I quite enjoyed my (second *) viva - one of my examiners even gave me a copy of his new book.

Out of interest, how did you get into palaeontology? I was really obsessed with dinosaurs as a kid but ended up as an archaeologist because I convinced myself that I couldn't do palaeontology as a degree subject. And I though the career prospects would be better [hollow laugh]

    * my first viva wasn't much fun, but at least I didn't fail - major corrections id="size1">?

Congrats - I prefer Dr Svensk because I have to admit I thought Dr S Tiger Who? [:I]

And in answer to your question about the bank, I didn't need to show proof but I did wait until I was formally allowed to just in case. Well done again. I'm glad I didn't have hitched to distract me during my write-up as it would have taken me longer - your 4+ years is quite good going taking that into consideration ?

Thanks, I think you're right. I tried to change it again but it wouldn't let me so I will try again tomorrow. I suspect there is a limit to how many changes we can make in a day.

I've always been obsessed with dinosaurs too! I did a Geology BSc, then Palaeobiology MSc and finally my PhD was evolutionary biology, though I did manage to get quite a bit of palaeo into it!

You're right though that you can't really do Palaeontology as a degree subject, you need to do either Geology or Zoology really, depending on where your interest lies. There are some Palaeobiology undergrad courses now but it's generally recommended to stick with a more traditional subject at undergrad level.

What area do you work in? I did an Archaeology course in my first year undergrad but ended up ditching it as after the first two weeks (which were fab - human evolution) they just went on about early farming and I got bored [:I]

Ps. My H got majors too though he didn't have a second viva. It's reallyt tough and seems to be getting more common recently? Could just be my perception but I know of another three people who've had majors within the last six months.

You'll need your cert, or at the very least your letter of confirmation.

I have to say that it seems like I've had better service since becomming Dr.

Cheers. I'm thinking of changing bank accounts anyway so I might just wait until I have my degree certificate.
