Just a quick self-indulgent post to say that after 4+ long years of hard work I had my viva last week and passed with just a month of minor corrections, most of which I've finished already ? Just a quick self-indulgent post to say that after 4+ long years of hard work I had my viva last week and passed with just a month of minor corrections, most of which I've finished already ?

I'm so very happy and would like to thank Hitched for helping me retain sanity and reason and giving me many opportunities for procrastination (maybe I would have finished earlier without it though ?).

<musing>Maybe I should add Dr to my username? </musing>

Ps. Apologies for the over-use of !!!, I'm still very bouncy.

    Just to add that I didn't have to show any proof of title when I changed my bank details. I was quite suprised.

    I've always been obsessed with dinosaurs too! I did a Geology BSc, then Palaeobiology MSc and finally my PhD was evolutionary biology, though I did manage to get quite a bit of palaeo into it!

    You're right though that you can't really do Palaeontology as a degree subject, you need to do either Geology or Zoology really, depending on where your interest lies. There are some Palaeobiology undergrad courses now but it's generally recommended to stick with a more traditional subject at undergrad level.

    What area do you work in? I did an Archaeology course in my first year undergrad but ended up ditching it as after the first two weeks (which were fab - human evolution) they just went on about early farming and I got bored [:I]

    Ps. My H got majors too though he didn't have a second viva. It's reallyt tough and seems to be getting more common recently? Could just be my perception but I know of another three people who've had majors within the last six months.
    id="quote">

    I'm a human osteologist/physical anthropologist, so the interesting stuff! I agree with you about the early farming, I can't understand how people get so excited about pots and emmer wheat ?

    I think major corrections are becoming more common too - I know at least 2 other archaeologists and several biologists who've had majors. I think it's because of the 4 year limit the funding bodies impose. I had to submit when I wasn't ready because the uni would be penalised otherwise. Majors was pretty fair for me though, and gave me the extra time I needed to get it sorted out.

    Sabs07 - that sounds fab. It's an area I'm really interested in though I doubt I would stand much chance with my specific background. I did a human evolution course as part of my MSc and it was one of my favourite courses. I might look to do something in early mammal evolution or primate evolution though.

    Are you based at a uni? Can I ask where or is that too much info for Hitched? Sorry for the questions, I'm just naturally nosy - makes me a good scientist I reckon ?

    I agree with you re: the four year limit being a major factor in the rise in people getting majors. I do wonder if we'll see a reversal of the four year limit in years to come?

    I know of quite a lot of people who work in hominid and human evolution, especially in the areas of evolution of speech and locomotion - fascinating stuff. Bit of a tangent, but I've been following the Flores "hobbit" story with great interest.

    I work at a uni based in a small cathedral city in the North East, if that's enough of a clue!

    Even having had majors, do I think the 4 year limit is a good thing - I know so many people who would have just carried on forever if they didn't have a time limit.

    Love the bank idea. I might be a skint but I'm a skint Dr! Not sure if they'll let me though until I have my actual degree certificate? Anyone know?
    id="quote">

    You'll need your cert, or at the very least your letter of confirmation.

    I have to say that it seems like I've had better service since becomming Dr.
    id="quote">

    Jogging my memory now but I think I did show my letter of confirmation afterall. I think I've received better service too.

    Sabs07 - Yes I think I know where you mean! You don't need an expert there in bioinformatics/taxonomy/systematics by any chance? ?

    I wonder why. I'm not convinced it comes from any antiquated notions of title and respect.

    I think people probably go, "ah, Dr X must be a clever dick and is unlikely to be fobbed off with the standard range of excuses, so I might as well just get on and do this."

    I don't know but they are much more polite and I sense fear in them when I put on my stern voice ?. My dental practice also treats me with more respect I think and I'm sure it's because they think I'm a medical doctor and they wouldn't give two hoots about my obscure thesis if they knew ??

    My doctor has started taking me more seriously and using more technical terminology, but then my thesis was sort of medical. The dentist now gives me a lot more detail about what he's doing, not that that's always a good thing [xx(]

    Yay - well done ?

    My H is currently in the hell that is writing up and after 5 years (he's part time) of saying the title didn't bother him and he probably wouldn't use it (he's on the scientific ladder) he says now we realises how hellish writing up is he wants anyone and everyone to call him Dr once he finally gets through it all as he needs some public recognition of the thesis!

    You get changing to Dr on whatever you like!

    A big congratulations Doc. ?

    Having just seen our best friend go through the same blood, sweat and tears over the last few years doing his PHD, another one who was ready to jack it all in, I fully appreciate the hard work you have gone through, he qualified last month.

    Once again a big well done.

    Congratulations! I was going to suggest a move to Bristol as well ?

    I didn't have to give my bank any proof - I rang up and asked to change my title and they just asked what to. Should have said Duchess ?

    Congratulations Svensk ? I am in total awe of anyone who can dedicate so much sweat and toil into such an achievement!

    But you're not allowed to move to Bristol too, else there'll be no-one left to come to Edinburgh meets [pout]
