gotta love a brain wave... opinions pease

emmieloos, 16 February, 2014 at 08:11 Posted on Planning 0 12

Bit of background first. My dad is very very shy and hates any sort of attention that is focused on him. TBH I think hes more nervous about walking down the aisle than me.

When H2B and I announced we were getting married one of the first things my dad said to my mum was "I'm not doing a speech." Well of course mum went mad and told him it was one of the few things I'd ever ask him to do for me and he WILL be making a speech and blah blah blah. Then one of his work mates suggested recording it and if he did freak out and get too nervous he could just play the recording, which sounded like a good option but a bit i just felt it wouldn't have the same effect.

Cue super daughters brilliant idea. I had been watching Tom Fletcher's (the dude from mcfly) wedding speech on youtube (for the 10 thousandth time and crying at it yet again) and noticed the screens behind him with pictures and words and thought it was brill. My computer whizz brothers could help him put together pictures and words to music to create a father of the bride video rather than speech!!! My mum would probably be involved as well so it would really be from my whole family. Best man could introduce it so that my poor dad doesn't even have to get up. We'd play it all onto a projector for everyone to see and knowing how my brothers work it would be beautiful, touching and probably try to embarrass the hell out of my lol.

What do you all think?

    I think it's a brilliant idea.

Yes, it's tradition for dads to do a speech but if it's going to cause so much stress there's no point doing it just because it's tradition.

A lot of people don't do everything completely traditionally anymore anyway.

Great idea! I've suggested to my dad that he could record his but I think he is going to just try and do it.

i was at a wedding recently where the best man recorded his speech and it was a great idea, he had old school photos of them and teen pics.

go for it! You want your dad to enjoy your big day too, not spending all of it fretting over a silly speech .

Brilliant idea, we have had this at some weddings, the last thing you want is your father to worry about your wedding day, have you suggested it to him, I think I may do this at my daughter's wedding ?

I think that's a brilliant idea. My mum is giving me away and I know she'd never want to do a speech so I might 'borrow' this idea.

Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one repeatedly watching Tom Fletchers wedding video. I absolutely love it and it makes me well up every time x

That sounds like a fantastic idea!! My dad insists that he's a great public speaker, but at my sisters wedding in 2012, he forgot his prompt cards AND glasses. Cue awkward nervousness, mumbling and this wierd thing he does when he's nervous where he keeps opening his hands to hip width and then bringing them in in together clasped. It was very awkward to watch. I told him he HAD to have his speech memorised as well as the cards and either wear contact lenses or have his glasses around his neck!! I'd love to broach the subject of that with him but I can just imagine his response. "Are you suggesting I'm incapable of delivery a speech at my own daughters wedding?!?!?!"

We arent having any speeches at our wedding for this reason, people are too stressed out and daunted by the idea of it.

So we were going to have a video montage instead. Cheesy maybe, but it saves everyone stress on the day!
