Grandparents - what do you call 'em?

Kentish Gal, 22 August, 2013 at 14:22 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 44

Following on from the auntie/uncle debate, I'm curious, what do you call your grandparents?

For my dad's mum, my sister and I never switched to 'Nan' from 'Nanny' as we grew older, and I have seen friends raise their eyebrow when I've referred to her as such.

My mum is 'Tush' to my son (due to baby's funny but incorrect attempts to pronounce her first name), but Nan to my nephew. I don't really want our future kids to call her Tush. And I don't like Nanny (especially as we may end up employing a nanny...).

I like Gran, but not Granny or Grandma. H's mum will be Grandma, as she is to his nephews.

It's all a bit complicated... ?

Mum's parents were Grandma and Grandad, Dad's parents were Nanny and Grandpa (Nanny was meant to be Nana originally but my sister just kept saying Nanny!)

I could combine the two for my mum and just call her Dead-mad.

"Nanny" and "Grandad", for both sets. For maternal grandparents, I followed with their first names, while for paternal grandparents, I used their (my) surname. None of them are around anymore.

It's very normal for us, because it's a very common term in Irish families. If I hear someone use the word Nanny, I tend to think they have Irish in them somewhere.

Boy calls his Nanny "Nannan", and his Mum is "Nannan" to his niece. I'm not keen on this term, not sure why. His Grandad was "Grandad".

Nanny and Pop on my mums side, although he died years before i was born.

Nanny and Grampy on my Dad's side. Grampy was sometimes known as grumpy Grampy. (well we were a PITA as kids and used their spare bed as a trampoline.)

Sadly I haven't got any and sometimes feel very envious of people who have grandparents.

My nieces and nephews call their grandparents (my mum and dad) nannie and bampie.

Granny and Grandpa on my mum's side who I was very close to. My Granny died when I was 26 and I still called her that, wouldn't change just because I'd grown up! I don't like Nanny etc.

The other day when I parked and let the dog out the car my mum opened the back door and said "There's Granny's wee girl" ?. She gives me the no grandchildren guilt A LOT!

Haven't had any for 40 years!

I am Granny S.... to my granddaughter.

"Nanny" to me is the hired help (Mary Poppins) or a goat!

    Always grandma and grandad.

I've only got my grandma on my dads side left now. Grew up with both grandads on both sides, but never knew my grandma on mums side - she died when I was just under 5 months old.

My Mum's Mum lived with us so she was Nanna as it was less formaly than Gran/Granny in her mind. Her husband who died when I was a baby was known as Pop. On my Dad's side it was Grandad and Grandma although I never knew Grandma. All have died now. Although OH still has one set left and I call them Grandma and Grandad they're 94 and 92 so don't always know who is who in the large family. It made sense to call them what they're used to. Although in exchange Grandma calls me Geraldine usually. It's not my name but her daughters name. I don't know whether to take offense or not. Geraldine is lovely but about 65 and lives in Australia whereas I'm 28 and live in Suffolk. Bless her.

I had a Nanny Mo (Maureen) and Grandad.

I still have a Nanny Wing (she used to live by the swing but I couldn't quite say Nanny Swing!) and Poppa. Not sure where the name Poppa came from (H thinks it's hilarious), but he is my step-grandad as my Nan lost her first husband (my real Grandad) to lung cancer at 48, then married Poppa lots of years later.

Mum's parents are Grandma and Grandpa. My dad's parents are Ba and Dada.

H has got a Grandma and Grandpa (mum's side) and a Grandma and Grandad (dad's side). I call them the same.

A 'calls' both grandmothers Grandma, and my dad is Dada and H's dad is Grandad. He may well choose other names when he can actually speak, but that's how we refer to our parents in front of him IYSWIM.

Nan and Grandad. This is what my boys call my parents.

My Mum refuses to be Grandma, "because old people are called Grandma". I made her a Nan when she was about 40, so I can understand her not wanting to be Grandma.

Saying that, my friend is 42, and hates "Nan", she wants to be Grandma when her kids have kids.

I have grans and grandads. Although both grans are called something I'm not allowed to say on hitched when I'm in private. They are not nice people and give me some amount of grief.

H has grans and a nana and grandads.

I only have one set and they have always been called Nanny & Henry. Don't know anyone who refers to my Granddad as anything other than Henry!
