Groom taking your name?

Miezy83, 2 March, 2014 at 20:30 Posted on Planning 0 2

Hi, after much discussion we have decided the my OH will take my name after the wedding as he is the only one in his family with his name and it really has no meaning! Not quite sure how to go about it tho, I'm guessing it will be more than just the marriage cert! Has anyone done this or know how it works?

I've previously changed my name via Deed Poll and it's quite straight forward to do, you can get all the info from here http://www.deedpoll.org.uk and you just then need someone to sign the certificate that knows hubby x

My fiance is taking my name too! I'm so excited about it.

I also know how it works cos about 15yrs ago I changed my middle name and surname. Your OH needs to apply for a Deed Poll. He can just apply via a site like deedpollsonline.co.uk and they send a form to sign and have witnessed. After that he just has to go through the normal procedures of changing it with his bank, credit card company etc. There is actually a section on the Deed Poll site covering this eventuality: htttp://www.ukdps.co.uk/AMansRightsUponMarriage.html In essence, it says:

some companies and organisations will change their records to your wife's surname upon presentation of your marriage certificate, but many will not, particularly financial institutions e.g. banks and building societies. A Deed Poll will guarantee that your new surname will be accepted by everyone without question. Please note, government departments, including the Passport Office and DVLA accept marriage certificates as documentary evidence of a man taking his wife's surname.

In my experience, some places will want to see a photocopy of the Deed Poll, some the original (in which case take it in personally or post special delivery!) It sounds like some would just accept the marriage cert, but I wouldn't rely on that Smiley smile

This site tells you all you need to know about changing your name by deed poll and has links to the Ministry of Justice where yuou can download the forms etc:

    https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll

There are lots of online services that will simply produce the papers for you. They then post them to you to then get witnessed and charge you for the privelige but it doesn't have to cost a penny. Just make sure you produce as many as you're likely to need and get them all witnessed at the same time. It could be part of your ceremony and get your witnesses to also witness the deed poll when signing the register Smiley smile..

This site is free and you fill in the info and it turns it into the formal woridng that you can then print yourself and get witnessed and that's it, job done.
