Groomswear - pocket hankerchiefs

*Ducky*, 17 February, 2012 at 11:43 Posted on Planning 0 14

Are your H2Bs having these?

We aren't hiring matching suits, H2B will be wearing his own 3 piece charcoal suit, with a pale gold cravat. We have also bought 10 matching pale gold ties for all the men coming to the ceremony if they wish to wear them (they were only a fiver each!).

They company also sells top pocket hankerchiefs, and I was wondering of getting one of those (probably just for the H2B). I was just wondering if your H2Bs will have one?

I don't think he would use it either. He won't even wear his jacket most of the day as it'll be warm (even if it's raining) in July.

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure his top pocket even is a real pocket. Maybe I just won't mention matching hankys are available, then it's one less faff to tick of the list.

The top pocket will be real (at least it should be). Just carefully un-pick the stitches.

Handkerchiefs are an optional extra, I would say most of my Grooms do wear them now (previously it was about 50%). Most people tend to fold them in a straight line, so they don't interfere with the buttonhole.

Our chaps are wearing tuxes with OH and BM in evening tails (yes an unusual choice, but my god they look good!)

We are having bow ties and cumberbunds (for the tuxes) made out of the same fabric as the BMs outfits, and there was enough to make hankies too - so I think they will be wearing them, or I'm sure at least some will.

Thinjking back to other weddings that OH has ushed and BM'd at I think it was about 50/50 who had them, I I can't say I would have noticed either way!

I have a male BM and I'm hoping he'll agree to wear a leopard print hanky, but if not he'll have a BM coloured one too.

Thanks for the picture BT - I love that square folding, will have to show OH and see what he thinks!

Most of our friends wear suits and always have a 'pocket square' in some shape or form.

We had so many at our wedding that our TOG started taking pics just of peoples pockets, , , LOL

Not everyone's cup of tea though,

I would say its a must, it looks fantastic, so smart.

I'm shocked by what some grooms wear, ie, just a normal suit etc !!

He will be wearing 'just a normal suit.' It's an off-the-peg but altered to fit perfectly designer suit. Personally I think classic suits are more flattering than penguin tails.

Plus our actual ceremony will be small, just 20 guests, at a beautiful windmill. It's just not the sort of wedding, not are we the sort of people that want all the men to match. One cut of suit cannot possibly suit all man-shapes, so we are letting them all wear their own. We want an informal feel so they would look positively pompous if they were to wear tails, hankies and top hats (don't get me started on top hats and canes - it's wedding not fancy dress..)

Duckybum - Are you me??!! We've got the same colour scheme and I completely agree with you about tail coats!

I think they're fine for a manor house/large church/castle, but when people wear them in hotels and reg office wedding, in my opinion it looks ridiculous! A 'normal' suit that like you say doesn't look fancy dress looks so much smarter I think.

And don't get me started on swirly waistcoats... ?

I asked h2B what he thought, and like most things, he wasn't really sure. So he would like to buy a pocket square and see what it looks like all together. It'll just be him with one if he likes it, his only concern is it will look too much with his buttonhole - but you don't know until you try!

If he hates the pocket square, I might use it to rustle up a matching bag. Either to put confetti in for the FG, or of it turns out really small we can put the rings in it! It won't go to waste Smiley winking

HayleyMay - I felt quite indifferently to the swirly waistcoats I had seen at previous weddings, but most of the time I do feel slightly sorry for the blokes wearing them, because they just aren't manly! Then we started looking for something for ours, we just could not find anything we liked. I think it's because when you pay quite a bit for a suit, the cheap (and most of them are cheap!) waistcoats just don't live up to your expectations of looks, fit or quality.

My H is a stickler for tradition and "would rather be naked than not wear a pocket square." You can either have them folded as in Bespoke Tailor's pic, or just scrunched up like here:

If they're made from silk, you don't actually use them as a handkerchief - they're for decoration only!
