Grrr Marks + Spencer *moan*

I bought some stuff on M+S gift cards (which were wedding pressies) online, it said it had gone through and there was a small balance to pay via my debit card. Roughly about a tenner for the over spend plus postage.

Just checked online and they have taken the whole bloody lot off my debit card so my bank account is now totally wiped out and more or less zero balance. It's the week before pay day, so am brassic.

The unhelpful 'ummm ahhh' snotty snuffly advisor on the phone told me they can only send me a cheque for the gift card amount, rather than refund my bank account directly.

I had to argue my case with him, I felt a bit bad doing it as I could tell he sounded really rough and it isn't his fault, but I really can't understand how they can take the money directly from me yet couldn't put it directly back, and no matter what it was their error and I shouldn't be out of pocket.

He eventually said the manager gave him 'special permission' and they are going to refund my card...which can take around 5 days. FFS.

That's not on - they should do a chaps at their expense. Did they explain why the error occurred?

Can someone lend you some cash?

Id also follow up and ask for compensation. A gift card would be nice. To spend in store of course...

That's really bad, , they take it quick enough, should be able to put it back the same day.

Agree with Beez. I'd be insisting on a Chaps refund. Why should you be without your dosh for a week through no fault of your own?!

Also, some gift vouchers wouldn't go a miss either!

Chaps is a payment method as opposed to BACS which would take 3-5 working days so the money gets into your account in the same day. It unlikely the M&S call centre would be able to authorise it for you though. I know our Customer Service staff aren't allowed to do it unless its exceptional circumstances and even then it needs a directors approval. I imagine a Call Centre Team Manager wouldn't have the authority to issue it- sorry Smiley sad

You are well in your rights to ask for compensation, they should be able to send you a cheque as opposed to a voucher, not as much use to you as the actual money in your account but at least you wouldn't have to spend it in store.

    Thanks Mini.

I will see how fast I get the refund and if it is really slow I may well kick up a bit of a fuss and ask for some kind of gesture.

I had similar incident not so long ago. Paid for some shopping via debit card, checked my receipt and they had overcharged me, went straight to customer services, they gave me a refund via voucher.

I said this means I have to come back in and spend the voucher instead of it just going straight back on my card, but the miserable woman had every excuse under the sun why they couldn't refund me direct.

HATE customer service people and now M&S! ?

M&S did this to me too, debiting my credit card for full amount instead of part gift card and part credit card. They refunded my card after taking gift card details and debiting it first. Followed up by a phone call to confirm it was done.
