Grrrr... Personal space?

Donna N, 15 October, 2008 at 16:08 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

Twice in the last couple of days I have had someone stand so close to me I thought they wanted to look at my clothing labels.

Monday I was in the supermarket and a woman stood right next to the chip and pin machine when I was about to pay for my stuff. I did a half laugh and said "excuse me" and she moved about an inch backwards but still not enough for me not to be able to smell her godawful perfume.

Today I was in the queue for the bank cashier and a woman behind me was on her mobile talking away and walking in a kind of semi circle behind and around me while chatting. It drives me absolutely mad! I'm too polite I know, but for god sake BACK OFF!!!

Arg, i hate that, how awful. i'm always tempted to look up, give a dazzling smile and say "could you get the *** out of my face, please?"

    never had the nerve, alas.

Sounds like one of those tricks they show you in The Real Hustle. The woman on the phone is probably really setting her phone to take a video shot of you putting in your number and they the card will be swallowed by their rigged cash point. They retreive the card and then have your pin number too.

Na this was for the actual cashier, just paying in cash - I didnt have my card out or anything. She was just an impolite knob I think!

I remember once my Mum took me shopping to the indoor market in Coventry - she wanted me to carry her bags. One of the bags I was carrying, stuffed with fruit and veg, was a canvas one with wooden handles, which meant the top of the bag was very rigid.

The woman in the queue behind me kept resting her shopping bag on top of the one I was holding, which made it bl00dy heavy.

I kept pulling my bag out from under hers, so she kept almost dropping it, but she'd just tut and put her bag on top of mine again. As I was only about 14 at the time, I didn't feel confident enough to ask her what the hell she was doing...

This sort of behaviour drives me crazy.

We went to see Bill Bailey at the Eden Project this summer. We were standing on the hard which slopes slightly towards the stage, there was plenty of room all around us and all through the first half a woman stood so close to me I could sway without moving my feet and make contact with her. I did my usual trick of stepping backwards onto a toe and she didn't shift. I was really quite cross by the time the interval came and worked myself up to have a word if she came back to do it again (I hate confronting people!). She didn't though. She was probably doing the same to some other poor soul in the audience.

I particularly hate it when someone in the queue behind me at a till pushes their shopping trolley into me because they're so impatient and have no idea about personal space.

This happened to me in our local OHO store at the weekend. A chap was holding his baby daughter (about a year old) right behind me and I have to admit, I felt so uncomfortable I thought I was going to have a panic attack (I really don't like babies!!) - I ended up asking my H to swap places with me and went outside to wait with the dog instead.
