Grumpy them and us type rant about Hitched

barongreenback, 22 September, 2008 at 12:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 117

Maybe it's just me but I've noticed a couple of BTers/Planners coming onto OT and asking for help, recommendations, advice etc. without even bothering to introduce themselves or engage in the board before posting? When I say Bter or Planner I mean that their history of recent posting indicates not posting on OT. Bit rude I feel.

They might well be dimwits. I'd like the opportunity to make that judgement before helping them ?

I don't really see a problem with it. I would probably not notice if someone were new or not though TBH.

I post almost exclusively on OT, and lurk on BT when I am really bored ? but I would imagine that plenty of people post on more than one board. I've never really known another forum that has such distinct communities as this one. If perhaps they are used to other forums (which often have an introductions board that covers all the others) and browse all the main boards here, it may not occur to them that if they post frequently on one side that the others won't know them.

I think that sometimes new WPers read the forum definition blurb and may think that all OT stuff has to be on OT.

I read OT all of the time but don't post that much here. I think because I lurk so much that people should know as much about me as I know about them. ?

I would like an introduction too, I think. I'd be more inclined to respond anyway.

I think there are plenty of OT 'regulars' who are take take take and only ever ask questions too, so those contributing to other parts of the board don't bother me at all.

I suppose it's because this is just a normal forum - I hadn't actually realised that there was a 'them' and 'us'..... I suppose you could say 'hi, I'm x, usually post on planning' or whatever, but if the post is nice and chatty or asking something in a polite way then I can't see why anyone would be expected to 'explain their appearance' here...

are we talking the excessively needy ones, or the constant knowledge-tapping ones? or both? ?

I think the bit in bold is certainly true. I can't say I'm hugely bothered about it, but I suppose it is a little thoughtless*.

*edited to clarify that it's the lack of introduction which is a bit presumptous/ thoughtless, not the fact that Clairy and I ignore said posters, although, hmmm...... ?

I agree with this, and also flowerys point that other forums don't tend to be so "rules based" actually, not rules but baron getting pissed off with you ? If I were pregnant or planning a wedding i would just start participating in the other boards not do a "hi I'm Hyacinth from OT" kind of post as I find them a bit cringy and don't like being the "virtual" centre of attention.

No way Baron! Anyway, everyone's needies are bound to be different.

Also, the ensuing row would more than likely crash Hitched, then what would we all do when we're meant to be doing other things with our free time ?

It doesn't bother me at all. I am probably more likely to reply to a question from someone I feel I "know" though, unless it's a particularly interesting question or I suspect I might be the only one around who can help on a particular subject.

I'm guessing im one of the 'dimwits'.

Anyway, I can see where you are coming from. I read OT a lot but dont generally post on here unless it is something I think the wider community of OT might be able to help with and is absolutely unrelated to BT. I have only posted over here a few times in the last year or so and introduced myself on the last couple but when I posted last night I didnt bother but I did say Hello instead of just diving in. I figure there is quite a cross over of people on the different boards and as i've been here so long I forget sometimes to introduce myself.

Actually, thinking about it, whenever I see a post entitled "just introducing myself" or something, I always assume it's a troll ?

You should also bear in mind that some people have been regularly contributing to OT in the past but now don't have as much of a chance to post here but do on BT for advice, hence their recent history being over there. They may have changed their name and not actually be a 'newbie', or just not recognisable as an OT regular any more.

I sometimes read WP and don't feel the need to introduce myself over there if I decide to post so don't see why anyone else would need to do the same in OT

why would you guess you were a dimwit if you've only been over here a couple of times?
This always happens with these posts, everyone thinks they are the one everyone is talking about (whcih always strikes me as somewhat self obsessed TBH)

Doesn't bother me. Although I think of myself as an OT-er as I'm here all the time, but I don't actually post very much. I flit between OT, WL and occasionally BT. I'm sure on all 3 forums people must think "who's that". ?

What I really do dislike is when someone comes over asks a question and never responds again. There's one person in particular who always did this so now I just avoid her posts completely. Very rude imo. Whilst I appreciate it does happen on times (I know I'm guilty of it myself), it's when it's every bloody time.

That would be me ? now I've had another baybee! I also absented myself from all boards for about a year, due to personal circumstances...... so many people on here wouldn't really know me now [sob!]
