Grumpy them and us type rant about Hitched

Maybe it's just me but I've noticed a couple of BTers/Planners coming onto OT and asking for help, recommendations, advice etc. without even bothering to introduce themselves or engage in the board before posting? I'm guessing because of a post yesterday that Tinks feels that way. In this case I don't think Tinks is being 'self obbsessed'.

I've not got PMT Sparks, I've got man 'flu. That's a million times worse.

Still think they're rude though - not looking for a formal introduction as such (I don't need to know their colour scheme or how long it is until their next bout of baby dancing).

I know I can be guilty of this when I have posted before. I get advice from say a couple of people, say thank you then get work distracted! Thne when I go back say the next day more people have responded and I think do I add thank you again, or just leave it.

Spose it depends what you mean by introducing yourself...for some people that is "Hi I am so and so and I wear green shoes" and for some it might be a big old long explanation which I guesss not all people will want to read.

I can't say I ever remember doing a 'hello' on here post when I began posting on here as well as WP while I was still sorting out my wedding. I occasionally post on BT and WP but only very rarely and I wouldn't feel the need to introduce myself.

I post on quite a few forums and none have such a divide. I think anyone should be able to post on any board on here without having to 'introduce' themselves in any way.

well, i dont think thats rude really. if you ve thanked those who ve responded , and thats that, then if anyone responds after that and dont get thanked, thats their lookout really. you cant be expected to keep checking forever.

one of my annoyances is when people ask "what should i wear" or "i ve got this dress, what do you think" and they dont say what shape they are, height, build, size, nothing.

I agree Nick. I dislike the ones who ask a question and never post on the thread again. Very rude.

I'm sure you remember my "what dress should I wear" threads ?, but to be fair I did post my hight, build, colouring and size. But I see what you mean, if a random asked the question without the above information how can anyone be expected to answer.

That's fair enough but there is so little migration between boards these days that to all intents and purposes, they are like entirely separate websites. Moreso I feel with BT though than with planning. Planners and some OTers graduate to BT and then never come back.

I'm also very happy that the read count has gone. I give up counting the amount of times someone would post then post again saying "x number of people have read but nobody can be bothered to reply". Um, no. Nobody has replied because we have nothing to say/ no answer to the question. People needed to realize threads would be opened as you can only give so much info in the title.

Anyway, I would just refresh the page then over and over again. I'm sure I wasn't the only one. Within a couple of minutes the read count would jump up extortionately.?

Oh yeah, ASL .. reminds me of my AOL days!

Age - just the right age for you

    Sex - yes please

    Location - here baby

    ?

PS. Just for the record, I'm aspiring to those stats, although I need to wear some really sexy high heels to get the height right! ?

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean. Do you mean that you'd like people to introduce themselves in a separate thread before replying to/starting any threads on OT?

What if the time between posts on OT was a few months? Would they need to do a separate introduction thread every time in case they'd been forgotten in the mean time?

Or do you mean an introduction at the start of their reply along the lines of 'I'm usually on BT/WP but thought I'd pop over here...' type thing?

I've never introduced myself over here and I can't remember if I did on BT when I switched over there. I suppose I just thought that as I'd been a member of the forum in general so long and I do my fair share of giving as well as taking that no one would mind if I just got stuck in. I didn't really want to draw a big load of attention to my 'arrival' on a different board.

I think something along the lines of "I normally post on BT/WP/WL/OT, but think you guys might be able to help with this a little better" would suffice in the way of introduction.

I agree about the forum descriptions being a little different to the way it actually appears to work.

BGB - have you tried Hazel's solution for manflu yet? ?

But they're not newcomers, that's my point. They come in, ask a question about what restaurant in Wimbledon is best for their grandmother's 90th birthday and then bugger off back to BT. There are of course loads of people who post on both boards and those two names you mention are amongst them. What I am trying to say is that OT for some people seems to be a bit of a generalist advice board rather than an active community in the same vein as BT.

And no, I'm not looking for a formal introduction post but you end up recognising the people who already participate whether they have 1,000 posts or 10,000 posts (directed at someone else who I can't remember as this stupid system only lets me see the post I'm quoting).

I've started posting on OT again lately, more so than any of the other forums (although I still lurk on BT)

I haven't introduced myself, but I posted here countless times a day until December 2005 when my brain was taken from me in exchange for one, and later 2, children.

I'm back at work full-time now and my brain has started to regrow. It's a miracle!

I did wonder if I should introduce myself, but it seemed a bit arrogant, as if anyone would care who I was or where I came from. So I just jumped in and started posting. However, I don't think I only come here to ask questions... Mostly I come here to relieve the boredom.

Interesting because from a "mostly BTer" perspective there seems to be an ever increasing influx of WPers and OTers into BT, maybe it's that once gone they don't return....

I also think that there are huge numbers of us who read all the boards but post mostly on one and infrequently on the others. You do the same I notice ?

I think you understand my point perfectly - it's not about posting without introducing yourself, it's about taking from the board before giving anything back.
