Gurzle's budget thread

Storky, 5 October, 2011 at 13:53 Posted on Planning 0 52

Got me thinking about honeymoon budgets.

What would you class as a big budget honeymoon?

In terms of your own honeymoon, would you spend the same amount of money on a holiday or have you increased your normal holiday budget because it's your honeymoon?

We've massively increased our budget. We usually go camping, get a last minute city break or spend a week in a self catering cottage in Dorset that smells of damp! Instead we've got a weeks safari, followed by a week on the beach at an all inclusive in Mombassa. We figured we'll only be doing this once, so we'll do it in style!

Ever since my family packed up and moved to Devon, all of my holidays have been there. So, I never really set myself a budget for holiday.

However, we're going to be spending at least £1500 on our honeymoon which, to me, is a LOOOOT of money!

Our honeymoon is in this country, log cabin, hot tub on the the Yorkshire dales and is £415 for 4 nights. With good food, wine, petrol to get there and clothes we're probably spending £800-£900 in total

Our usual holidays are going to visit my parents and staying in their holiday home which costs us petrol and spendies at about £400 for a week

So yes our honeymoon is twice as expensive as our 'normal' holidays

I don't know what ours is costing - well we don't know yet it we've even got ryder cup tickets - if we have that will bump the cost right up, but it'll be worth it!

I'd say anything over about £5000 was big budget. I think my first honeymoon was about £7k and this time round we're spending just under £9k. For a normal big holiday we'd spend about £4k (no, not every year!) so yes, we're splashing out because it's a honeymoon.

Hmm, we spent way more than we would usually spend on a holiday (£10k honeymoon compared to about £3K on normal holihols). However, this has not cemented it in my head as a once-in-a-lifetime trip, rather it has convinced me that we need to spend more on normal holidays Smiley smile

We are spending about 6k on the honeymoon

Holidays can be anywhere from 300-2k depending how much we saved and if we feel rich! - OH travels ALOT for work so most of out holidays are done on airmiles and hilton points !

I don't understand "and clothes". Do people normally buy loads of new clothes for any other holiday? Or is it just another marketing trick by the wedding industry?

Again, I think this is relative to what you normally do/spend.

Our 'normal' holidays are usually around £500-£800 (last minute bargains usually to Egypt or Turkey!) and our honeymoon was £4.5k so quite a big jump.

This to us was big budget, but also to a destination that we wouldn't have gone to otherwise!

    Yes.

Although I hadn't figured that into my final honeymoon spend.

We spent £200 on our mini moon. My work colleague lent me her lodge for a (very big) discount. We spent £2k on our belated honeymoon to Cyprus.

Compared to what we spent on our wedding - it's a massive difference between the two.

I generally speaking always need to buy a few things as they don't tend to last more than a few years, especially once covered in suncream, salt water and chlorine!

Plus I like to buy myself pretty new things to wear.

I bought lots of white and cream dresses for my honeymoon... carried on the wedding theme!

Apart from maybe a new pair of shorts or a couple of extra t-shirts if my existing ones have shrunk or got holes I can't ever remember buying a load of new clothes for any holiday, ever.

We usually spend anywhere between £500-1000 on our holidays which tend to be to Spain/Greece/Turkey etc. For our honeymoon though we're looking to spend around £6000 so yes it's a massive increase!

However - we are off to New Zealand for a month!! - which we've wanted to do ever since we got together twelve years ago so we feel spending all that dosh is justified. I'd probably not spend as much if we were just going to have two weeks on a beach somewhere hot and sunny though.

We are spending double the amount that we would normally spend. We had to forfeit this year's holiday to afford it!

Hell yeah! I always buy myself something new for a holiday! Don't get me wrong I don't buy everything I need for the whole week/fortnight but I have to have at least one new thing even if it's just a cardi or pair of sandals ?

Normal family holidays for us come to less than £1000 for two weeks inc spends if we go camping (which we adore). Although when we went to Rome Tom and I spent more than that in 4 days but we went 5* ?? As we're getting married abroad we're sort of factoring our honeymoon in with wedding costs, we'll have a week in a 5* villa for £2500 for the four of us for the wedding. Then we'll have another week after the wedding doing some travelling (just the two of us) and staying in 5* hotels which I imagine will cost us about another £2500.

Anything over £5000 is a big budget holiday/honeymoon to me.

I don't normally buy a lot of new clothes for a holiday but the honeymoon has certain 'unique' traits that involve clothing that no one but my OH will see

I'd class anything between £4k-£7999 as a big budget holiday and £8k plus as a BIG budget holiday!

We're classing ours as our holiday of a lifetime but I suspect, as with FTLOMB, this will also serve to bump up future holiday costs, the foreign ones in any event.

Ours is £3.5k for a week in the Maldives. In comparison to other holidays a little more than what we've spent in the past (although we did spend £2.5k last year for 5 days in Vegas just for my 30th!)

Luckily I have a Mum who has an apartment in Spain so holidays abroad don't tend to cost too much for me but if I was going away (and not to my Mum's) I would probably think of paying up to £2k for a 10-14 days away for me and OH.

Same here. We normally do a cheap week in Newquay or a late cheap deal to spain at a push. We are doing the safari/beach thing in Kenya too. You only get to go on honeymoon once (once is a lie, we snuck in a week in Gran canaria after the wedding and then Kenya is in may)

Last family holiday we had was about £1200 for the 3 of us for a week in Majorca. Our honeymoon is WAY more than that (I think about £5K) for a 12 night Norwegian cruise. But it is a once in a lifetime deal (unles we win the lottery).

My first honeymoon (1997) cost £300 for a sleazy 2* hotel in Corfu - twin beds, not even a kettle in the room, in the middle of nowhere, and we only had £200 spending money for food, drinks, souvenirs etc for the week too.

I think £5K on a honeymoon is not an unreasonable amount, but it depends on your income. For me, I'd say big budget was over £8K, under £1000 is relatively low budget. But those who have more or less cash to splash might think differently.

Oh, and I definately need new clothes for my honeymoon - thermal undies and new gloves!

I would say anything over £4k is fairly big budget for a holiday but then we are looking to spend about that for our honeymoon as it's a once in a lifetime trip. I would say we are deinitely increasing the amount we usually spend as it's a special holiday that we want to be the best we've ever had.

We haven't had a proper holiday in over 4 yrs, what with buying a house, building extensions, renovating etc, all of our money tends to go on other things.
Our holidays tend to be visiting family in Scotland or Suffolk, so the costs are pretty minimal.
So for our honeymoon next April, we're spending around £2,500.

Our mini-moon was 2 nights in Harrogate, using my Tesco clubcard vouchers.

Our honeymoon to us is big budget, but I guess to others it's small.

Here here Annie Pie! If you want new clothes then buy new clothes!! We don't live in an age anymore where clothes are worn until they are unrepairable. If we want honeymoon clothes we will buy honeymoon clothes!

Anyway, myself and OH usually spend between £450 and £750 for a holiday lasting 7-10 days. Thats without spending money obvioulsy. Spends permitting, I imagine our honeymoon will be around £800 each. Depending on where we are going. Might be more if I get my way ?

We spent 3 times as much as we normally would on a holiday.

Likewise, we feel its raised the bar for our next holiday - currently pricing new york for 5 days...

We generally go for last minute deals to Europe on a "normal" holiday and spend around £1500 on the holiday but that does include everything from flights to food and everything in between.

Our H.M is costing £4000 ish, 5* AI.. a big difference to our normal holidays and again we, too, have had to forfeit this years holiday to go somewhere perfect on H.M.

I always buy new clothes, albeit only one or two pieces for normal holiday but for the H.M we will be buying pretty much everything new for it..

The HM we wanted was going to be a treat, and cost between 4K and 6K. We're now putting this back to give us longer to save so...

...our minimoon is costing about £500 for 4 nights away 4* including breakfast and dinner.

Plus I've got a little secret, which will be £1K

Seem to end up buying new clothes for all my holidays... But normally something necessary

Last holiday - new pair of walking boots (of the existing pairs one leaked like a sieve and one gives horrendous blisters as inside all worn out) definitely necessary, 1 pair lightweight walking trousers (previous pair had large hole in behind due to unexpectedly sitting on a rock). Previous holiday purchases have included waterproof jackets and summer dresses (not the same holiday!) and additional strappy tops and shorts after the weather turned out better than expected... Might well end up buying some nice undies for the honeymoon, but most of mine need renewing by then anyway, so not really an extravagance, just waiting until I know the budget before splashing out (wedding is eating money until then!)

It's a hard one- we don't tend to have a yearly holiday as such- we tend to decide we want to go somewhere, book/save and go. This means we tend to spend quite a lot on holidays but don't have them very often. This year we went on a cruise which was about £2.5k for the both of us- prior to this our last holiday was to Vegas 2 years ago (think that cost aroung £3.5-4k can't really remember now). We do tend to have little breaks around the country- a wedkend here and there but there not really 'holidays'. So in answer to the question I would see a 'big' budget honeymoon as somewhere over the 8K mark- mainly as this is definatly the limit we would set for a normal holiday OK above the normal holiday limit!)- mainly as we would take so long to save for it!! Our honeymoon is a present from FPIL so have no idea about price- we're going to Sri Lanka for 10 days I would guess around £2.5k???
