Gutted :-(

happycamper, 4 October, 2011 at 13:08 Posted on Planning 0 27

My dress is ruined with 4 days till the wedding. The seamstress has taken too much off the hem, it now hangs in midair looking frankly ridiculous, when two days ago it was a puddle around my feet, just slightly too much of a puddle and I didn't want to tread on it, but I didn't want my feet out. I'm so disappointed, so upset, can't even put it into words. It just looked so wrong. Came home from the fitting and cried my eyes out for an hour. Can't even explain it properly to H2B as he doesn't want to know about the dress. All he kept saying is ring the shop. Well, um, they can't glue it back on can they, and they certainly can't order another dress when that one took 5 months to come in, so how on earth would ringing them help??

All I can do is try to find some shoes with no sole at all, to at least claim back half an inch. I know "its only a dress", but I loved it so much, and I wanted to look 100% on my day, not like I've borrowed someone else's outfit. Oh dear, need to go and have another cry now. ☹️

Right, it probably doesn't look as bad as you imagine. Do you have a flash? My dress was above the ground (at the front) as it actually looked better like that. Are there any features on the dress that you could use to add length to the bottom e.g. ribbon? a lace edge?

Have you got any pictures? If so, let's see, and maybe someone will be able to make a suggestion Smiley smile

Oh no hun, i really feel for you. It is not 'only a dress' it is your dress for your special day.

What are the shop/seamstress saying, they have a responsibility to you to correct this. I don't know how or what they could do but surely they can't be just saying 'sorry' and leaving it at that.

Oh god no, what they say surely they can see that this is wrong. Did they offer any solution, do they have a sample they could alter. You mustn't accept this go back with someone to help you and get it sorted out. Can they let it back down at all? Do you have a picture. I would be sat in the shop crying till they sorted something out.

What's the dress like? could you add a contrasting colour strip along the bottom like this

    [View:http://www.alfredangelobridal.co.uk/collections/productdisplay.aspx?productID=4c5bde25-163e-4c41-ab90-a1fc843a2373&categoryID=0e1dbafc-84df-4fa0-9452-3dd8af69fdfd&pg=1&colorId1=:550:0]

Or possibly get a different seamstress to take more off and have a tea length dress? And some fab shoes

Hope something works out for you xxx

Sorry to hear about the upset, it's obviously natural to feel that way, however...

    1) On the day you will still look wonderful to the most important person, plus your guests.

    2) Nobody will notice as nobody knows what it "should" have looked like.

You should ring the shop and tell them about the problem and how upset you are, maybe they can't do anything about it now but if you don't give them a chance they can't even try can they? They're the professionals, they're at fault, and ut's up to them to come up with something.

On the day you won't even notice. Neither will your h2b. Trust me. I was there 2 weeks ago.

Mine too was slightly off the ground - so that you could see the base of my shoe, otherwise there would have been no way of walking for me.

See if you can find a photo and we'll take an objective look.

I too would ring the shop, at least they might be able to offer some advice or reassurance.

Sorry your feeling like this, it sucks Smiley sad

Have you got a picture? How much does it hang? Your dress should skim the floor. If they have cut too much off they should fix it for you, and I wouldn't accept it until it's sorted.

But remember its your big day and im sure you will look fabulous regardless!

Easier said than done but try not to worry, we will come up with a solution. My BM dress was ruined a week before mine but we managed to get it fixed with another seamstress and the moral support of Hitched!

My dress was a good few inches off the floor which I thought was too much but turns out it was better.

Could you make it into an ankle lenth or tea length and fluff it out with a petticoat or two?

Could you add some more fabric to it?

    Would lower heels help?

Agree with all the above. that's awful that its happened and any of us would be gutted too. but you have time to do something about this. make it tea length if that works or add something at the bottom - so many dress have tulle peaking out underneath.

Please go back to the shop, you don't know if they can do something about it or not, if there is anything of the fabric turned up they can do something about it, also they may be able to add an edging that would match. I know it is embarrassing going back so take someone with you or speak to them on the phone first, but its their responsibility to sort it for you

Happycamper, did you tell the shop it was fine (or sign the dress off as OK)? I had to sign that mine was fine and I was happy with it.

Two things you can try, if you wear a hoop can you adjust it by bringing it in a bit so that the dress is longer?

Or flat shoes? I have a paid of ballet pumps because my dress was too short with heels

This is a really important point - if it has been turned up there may be another inch or so which could be let back down - there was on my FG dresses but not so much on my dress as I had a tolle overlay - but it's so worth asking the question.

Thank you everyone for your lovely words, and to those that asked, it was all paid for, but not signed for, as they were keeping the dress in the shop till Friday. So after another hour of me upset but still telling him nothing useful (because he's not allowed to know about the dress - his choice) my H2B forced me to phone the shop. To cut a long story short they didn't realise how upset I was, and they were completely lovely about it. It is fixable (at no charge) as it is not yet hemmed and it should be ok to make it sit lower. I have been back, and they have booked me in for another fitting before the day so I can see it before I pick it up, and hopefully it will be ok. I feel like I've been through the wringer today, and yes it was probably an over-reaction over an inch or two of fabric, but as you lot all know, weddings do funny things to people's emotions and I'm just glad H2B made me talk to them or I wouldn't have slept tonight and would have spent the whole day worrying that I looked like I was levitating.

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions, it did help, you were right I needed to talk to the shop, and they can't sort something out if they don't realise they need to sort it.

Thank heavens you've got it sorted. My dress skims just above ankle length.... but it isn't a white one.

    Glad it's fixed.

I won't completely relax about it until I have tried it on again, and I can see for myself that it sits at the right length and it is all sewn and finished. But, I do have a backup plan.... walk up the aisle in bare feet!!

Fingers crossed it will be ok, the shop really seemed to want to make it right, and not only that but convinced they could, which is the important bit.
