H2B and I cant agree on cermony!

Nicola_25, 2 August, 2013 at 17:11 Posted on Planning 0 5

I don't know what to do, We have booked our wedding reception in a hotel and were planning to have the ceremony at the hotel as well, but we have since had to cut our already limited budget again, so we now have to get married in a registry office as its cheaper by about £500/£600 which is fine but we can only have 28 people there including us. where we were originally getting married we were having about 56 people there. So the first problem is I cant cut the people down to only 28 its impossible, I cant have some people and not the others (im already not inviting my cousins to the day part) I know that sounds a bit contradictory but the people i cant not invite are all uncles and aunts, brothers, sisters, step parents on both sides etc.

So I suggested to my H2B that why don't we just get married in the registry office just the 2 of us, 2 witnesses and our 2 children, then we can go straight from the registry office to the hotel where everyone can go and have the meal and speeches and party But H2B is adamant he couldn't do that!

Im so fed up of weddings we have ages til our wedding and Im already thinking of giving up and eloping (but H2B WONT!)

Sorry for the moany post just needed to vent

We were lucky in that our reception venue included the cost of room hire for a civil ceremony in our package. However, we are getting married in a church. Is this something you could look into? I know churches can be pricey but you might find it a cheaper option than your venue and you wouldn't be as restricted in your number of guests.

I think having just a few people at the ceremony and then to the hotel sounds like a perfect solution. Originally OH and I were going to do something similar - around 20 people (us, parents, siblings and a couple of close friends) for the ceremony but then have big party after. We've ended up changing this plan as our venue offered us a really good deal that meant we could invite the rest of family and friends to the ceremony as well.

Does your OH have any suggestions on how to reduce the numbers?

How tight is your budget and how far away is your wedding? Can you change the date to get better prices? Mon-Thurs, or out of season (Oct, Nov, Jan, Feb etc) would be much cheaper.

Have you thought about a Humanist wedding ceremony at your reception venue? You can have as many as you like and have the ceremony exactly as you'd like it... We had one and I could not recommend it highly enough and our guests loved it!! Sorry, thought your post was church vs RO..,, why so much more at the hotel? I'd do the tiny ceremony, massive party thing too Smiley smile

Good idea KG. We're having humanist ceremony too and I have to admit I wasn't sure about it at first. I was worried about it not being the "real" wedding. Since meeting our humanist celebrant though, I have no doubts at all. She is committed to making it about us rather than it just having legal restrictions that don't reflect us at all. Definitely a consideration Smiley smile

Could you perhaps get married in a different registry office in a nearby town if their capacity is bigger?
