haggling!

autumnbride:), 4 November, 2010 at 18:47 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi all,

I am quite new so if this topic has been posted recently; i'm sorry!!

Anyway I have been engaged for about a month now and as me and h2b want to get married next year it feels like we were behind on the wedding plan before my other half proposed!!

Our 1st milestone is to get the venue booked which we hope to do by the end of the month eek! but I was wondering how much money you have all negotiated off venues and other wedding expenses. Any tips for negotiating would also be gratefully excepted!

My wedding venue is quite a small country hotel and because we will be holding the ceremony, having our wedding breakfast and reception all there we are not getting charged any room hire (should be around £550). We also have every room in the hotel booked out for the Friday and Saturday night but have not paid for exclusive use. Now we know there is the possibility that locals will come in and use the hotel and if not all the rooms are taken by our guests on the Friday then the hotel will sell to the public but by doing it this way we saved £1500, although I can understand why people go for exclusive use in larger venues. I would say if you can pay a chunk of the money off quickly, more than just the deposit you should ask for a discount, and even if you dont get money off see if they will include stuff for free, lined hire, table or something. I know you sometimes feel rude asking for money off but when it comes to weddings everyone puts their prices up (except the HIBS on here of course) so dont feel rude asking fro them to come down in price or to give you something for free. Remember if you dont ask you cant get and once you agree something your chances of getting it reduced/ included are almost non existent.

We asked but they refused ☹️

HOWEVER we are getting married on a Saturday in June...

I guess if you are willing to have your wedding mid-week/Sunday or not in peak season you'd have more chance of getting a discount.

Always worth a try anyway! For example if it comes to £5250 - say could you do it for £5k and we'll book today?

Good luck and let us know how you get on! xxx

Hi and many congrats. We got married out of season so fell in within the hotel groups winter wedding package so got it a little cheaper than a peak summer wedding on a Friday/Saturday. I think we save about a £1k or so on the reception hire etc. Meals per head however were the same , same goes for the buffet.

We also managed to get an free add-on of our honeymoon pics on our wedding DVD as a montage played before our highlights! ? Photographer however - no chance!

We're paying £1000 venue hire. Sounds a lot, but we get exclusive use for the whole day - ceremony dinner and reception - and the catering costs are very reasonable (£35 per head for wedding breakfast and £15 a head for evening buffet). It also gets us discounted rooms, and there's no extra charge for crockery/cutlery, linen, staff and even a cake knife!

But we did some number crunching and decided it was still cheaper than a lot of other venues. Besides we've decided that seeing as we're getting tog and cake for free ? we could afford it.

I seem to have got the price down on our favourite venue (it is £215 a head) so I HAD to take off anything we didn'tneed and could find cheaper lol but still feel like I deserve an actual discount!!

Our parents are coming to look at our top 2 in 2 weeks so hopefully their gravitas will get us a final discount. Here's hoping anyway!

Thanks for all your advice! I would love to know where you are all getting married?

Not entirely sure if excited is the right word!! Most of the time i am fine and just smile and think I cant wait and then at other times i just want to scream. Seriously though I cant wait , I know everything is sorted and it is just my organising OCD kicking in.

I love the venue as well (obviously we wouldnt be getting married there if i didnt ? it is a hotel that we go to often and just love and as it is so small it is perfect for our day.
