Hair dye

mooshy, 11 January, 2014 at 15:40 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

I've been dying my hair for years and tried about every colour under the sun. I desperately need to dye my hair after my terrible ombre experiment a few months back has now gone all brassy and just yuk. I've been ignoring it because most of the time my hair is up in a bun anyway but I really just need to sort it out. Anyway the point of this ramble is to ask how many of you do allergy tests before you dye your hair. I used to be completely laid back about the whole thing and just slap the stuff on but last week someone I work with had a reaction to hair dye and her eyes were all swollen up and she's been dying her hair for years. I know these things have been coming out in the news more often lately so it's made me a little more wary. Has anyone had a bad allergic reaction and do any of the 'safer' hair dyes (herbal etc) actually work?

I never do. I know is should especially as I have had tattoos but I don't. I have never had one done when I have had my hair done professionally either.

I have also had many different colours - blue, red, pink, purple, black.... Never did I test before going ahead and doing it. Probably really stupid because there is a reason they tell you to but at the time I didn't want to wait around... ?

Another who has dyed her hair regularly from about 15, and never done a patch test. I have never had a reaction and have used so many different makes.

I always think I should do a patch test and then I never do. (Patch test autocorrected as psych test, I should probably do one of them too!)

Hi Mooshy. I've been regularly dying my hair since I was 16 and I always really worry about allergic reactions too!! To be honest I always do a patch test if I am dying with a brand that I've never used before or if I've not used it in a long time. But if it's the same one I'm using every 6/8 weeks or so then I don't bother.

I read somewhere that the more often you dye your hair then the more likely you are to have an allergic reaction. Not sure why or how true that is but since I do do it regualrly I always feel better doing a test - otherwise while the dye is on my hair doing it's thing, every tiny little tingle or slight itch makes me thing "oh god it must be a bad reaction", lol x

I've been doing mine for 20+ years and never done a patch test. Yesterday for the first time ever I got a really tingly itchy scalp while the colour was cooking though. I do always have a patch test when I get my lashes tinted though, it's just a bit too close to my eyes for comfort if it goes wrong.
