Hair extensions

sugarloaf, 18 June, 2012 at 01:09 Posted on Planning 0 9

Quick question, and way premature given I've only just planning for a wedding in December 2013- but does anyone have a sort of idiot's guide to hair extensions? I never thought I'd need them- I have very, very thick (wavy) hair, and up until recently it was waist length (and incredibly unruly, but did well when tamed by a hairdresser). I was talked into getting it cut, and it's now just past my shoulders- and I'm happy with my hair for the first time in my life. But now I probably don't have enough hair for the kind of hairstyle I'd envisaged for the wedding (I don't have any definite ideas, but I usually ask for a french roll for formal events, and I thought maybe something a little more elaborate than that?).

I know from Googling that they can be prohibitively expensive- are there cheaper options, and if so, are they incredibly inferior (and do certain hairstyles make cheap hair extensions look better or worse)? Should I dye my hair to match the colour of the hair extension? (I don't want to change hair colours, but I'm starting to get enough grey hair that it annoys me in any case, and I was thinking get the closest shade to my natural colour, even if it's a few shades off, then dye to match)

Are they a massive pain to put in and take out (would the hairdresser be annoyed by them, and would my FH and I have difficulty deconstructing my hair at the end of the day)? I'm used to hairstyles with literally hundreds of pins holding it in place. Is there anything else I should know about them?

I guess what I want to know is, if you were me, would you be growing your hair out again? I hated my long hair with the fire of a thousand suns, and would just whip a brush through it and stick it in a ponytail so it didn't look like I hadn't brushed it in a year and I'd been dragged through the bushes (although it usually looked like bedhead no matter what I used to do with it). But is it worth hating my hair again, for 18 months or so, to get it back to that length so I save money and hassle?

Thanks for reading.

Hiya- We recently shot a wedding for a lovely couple that run a hair extension business- they should be able to give you some good advice, and their website has some guides on it I think (click on 'information')... here's their website:

    Hiya,

Im growing my hair out but often wear clip in hair extensions to give me thickness. I have told my hairdresser that I'll prob want to have my hair extensions for the wedding but she has said that she may be able to do the hairstyle I want without them but she will see at my hair trial. The clip in's I get are from Sally's and I think they work out £20 a section (I usually use 5 sections when I have my hair down). They match up very closely to my hair colour although when I have dyed my hair in the past I have also done the extensions as they are real hair.

I would have a chat with a hairdresser as she may be able to do tour hairstyle without them.

    Rach xx

Your hair will grow a lot between now and December next year, so you might not even need them.

I had a weave last year. I bought the hair from my local Afro-Caribbean hairdresser and they matched the hair to my own. I had five rows which meant five plaits horizontally then the hair is woven to those. They hurt like a motherchuffer when I first had them in, however soon got used to them. The only thing with weaves is it puts a lot of pressure on your scalp. My friends who have had them long term have suffered hair loss and dry scalp.

Short term they are fine and give you extra length and thickness. I've sewn clips to the rest of the hair I had so I can reuse them for nights out.

    Thanks everyone.

Some of those extensions sound a lot more affordable than I'd thought. I'll definitely talk to a hairdresser (I'm not currently living in the area where we're to be married) and see what they think. I'm loathed to grow my hair out unless I really have to, as I hated it so much before this cut.

I got clip in ones from my a wig and extension shop in my local market. They ordered them in to match my hair colour. I got them trimmed and curled at the salon where I was having my wedding hair done. They cost me about £50 and I got 5/6 sections for that. I can wash them, curl and straighten them. They took some practise to use them on my own but umm getting there. The hairdresser did a brilliant job with them for my wedding. It helped that my SIL has several hair extensions and has used them for years do I went to her for advice. I'd say speak to your hair dresser.

I've got extensions in which i got to try out before the wedding as just before my h2b proposed I got all my hair cut off similar to franky out of the Saturday's! After a year of growing it, it was no where near long enough for what I wanted so I got the extensions in! I spoke to my hair stylist who I booked for wedding and she covered the bonds easily! I would speak to the hair dresser about them to ensure they are able to cover them so they won't be seen with your chosen hairstyle! Also make sure you buy real hair ones if you do get them because if you get the other ones you can't curl/straighten them etc!
