Hair up or down ?

oldgal, 5 May, 2011 at 18:42 Posted on Planning 0 14

I am having another hair trial this Saturday. My hairdresser says that it is best to have your hair up on your wedding day as otherwise it drops quickley and doesn't look as nice. She said she will put my hair back down for the evening. Trouble is I prefer my hair down and it is all very well having a nice updo but you can't see it in the photos from the front and I think I look better with my hair down ( or half up half down ). Kate Middleton had a half up /half down and I have to be honest she is stunningly gorgeous but her hair wasn't special in my humble opinion so I wondered if the hairdresser is right ? What are your views on this ?

I think you should remind your hairdresser who is paying!! Persoannly I ha the typical structured wedding up do. Mine will be very loose and half up half down. Go for what you want it to be like and not what your hairdresser thinks!!

I never have my hair up normally so I wouldnt even consider it for my wedding its just not me, I'm having all my hair down with very loose curls, if the curls drop who cares your still going to look beautiful. Dont be influenced by your hairdresser, who's getting married again? Smiley smile

Your hairdresser is wrong. i would tell you to have your hair how u normally have it so if its down normally then i would say to have it down and then look at different styles you can have being down. hope this helps. you just need to remember its your hair. x

Have it how you like. I'm having mine half-up/half-down and okay it might not be that "special" but on the day I will have a veil and a tiara covering it anyway and I am the damn bride, of course I will look special!

Go with your instincts. If you never wear your hair up, you will be risking that you don't feel good on the day, and not like how you look in photos. I have had brides who never wear even a ponytail, wear their hair scraped back, and seen it end in tears. Trust your instincts. Hair worn down will only fall if it wasn't styled well from the start. The girl in that is in my banner, I ended up redoing her hair on the day because the stylist didn't do a very good job, and it had fallen by the time she got to the hotel. I didn't even have the best tools to redo her hair with, but I did better than the lady she paid. Disclaimer tho, I went to school for cosmetology when I was in my 20's, so I knew what to do. There was no way I could sit by and not help out. It annoys me to see bad hair, when it's not rocket science.

I am having an updo, despite managing only a pony or twisty claw thing on normal days I have it up. My hair is nearly at my waist and as much as I'd like to have it down, my dress is all about the back so can't cover it! On a related note, having grown my hair specifically to have a loose updo, I can't wait to cut the stuff off. It gets EVERYWHERE!

I had my hair up. I rarely wear my hair down as it's so thick. I knew it would get on my nerves if I had it loose. Like the others have said, get your hair styled the way you want it - you'll only regret it if you don't.

If I was you I'd either tell your hairdresser to shut up or find a new one! If you're not comfortable with it up, then have it down like everyone says! I never have my hair up apart from in a big bun on top of my head in the shower! And I'll be having it loose on my wedding day. (I've got pointy elf ears!) It can still be different from your everyday hair; you can do a lot with loose hair x

I agree with all the girls. Go with a similar style to what you normally have. I never wear all my hair up and therefore wouldnt even consider having an up do on the day. I went for my hair trial a few weeks ago and asked for a half up half down with curls, But my hairdresser was very accommodating and said if i changed my mind not to panic as she can do it however i want on the day. I liked the style she did but am going to have more of my hair down on the day as by the time i got home i was feeling very self conscious as she had put more of it up then i wanted. Go with your instincts

Thanks guys. I have had lovely updos for balls and dos but when photographed I don't look good as the focus is all at the back ! I will go with my gut and ask her to do a half up half down do. I made the mistake of buying a side tiara before choosing my style so I may not get to use it but will give it a go. I want something unstructured but tidy if that makes sense ?

I don't agree with your hairdresser at all about hair styles falling out if worn down. It's down to the stylist styling your hair in the right way for your hair.

My hair was curled for my wedding and I was it mainly down with part up. The curls looked pretty much the same the next day! My hair was curled with tongs but if it had been curled with GHDs it would have fallen out within minutes that's what hair trials are for (we did one side with tongs and one side with GHDs) so you can see what works for you hair as everyone's hair is different.

You need to feel comfortable and yourself on the day.

You won't know what you want until you try it out and see it for yourself. I have NEVER liked the structured up-dos for brides and insisted i'd NEVER have one because I never wear my hair like that normally and I want to look like myself on my wedding day.

Then I had a trial with my hair very similar to how I'd normally have it, but a bit more.... y'know. STYLED! And I hated it. I felt too ordinary. So I had another trial where I handed all the decisions over to my hair and make-up lady, and ended up with a very structured updo, with curly bits and all the stuff I never liked. And I loved it. I felt pretty and princessy and confident. Would never have chosen that sort of do myself but it ended up being what I loved once I saw it.

Anyway! Play around a bit, don't be scared to experiment a little and just go with whatever YOU like the most.

Im having mine up but then I have mine put up every time I'm going anywhere special as it just suits my face better, plus most days its in a bun or pony tail.If yours is better down wear it down regardless what she says! I would go on Saturday and if she is still not listening to what you want find a new hair dresser, you only get one wedding day so you need to make sure you have what you want to make you feel fab!! x
