Hairdresser price question

50's pin up bride, 19 November, 2011 at 19:35 Posted on Planning 0 14

Evening ladies!

For those of you having your hair done on the big day by a pro, what are you paying?

I have literally no idea what is a 'good' price and don't want to be horrified when I ask my normal hairdresser! I think I'll only need 1 trial (which I'm not having until I have my veil, as I'm having a birdcage fascinator style on a hairband which I'll wear all day so the hair must work well with it.

On the day of the wedding, I could either go into town to have it done (which on a Saturday would be about 25 mins each way plus parking time so would probably add an hour plus stress to the morning. My MOH definitely wants her hair done too, but the other 2 BMs would prefer to do their own hair, so again going into town splits us up. I think I'd rather have a hairdresser come out to us, then she can do me first, then I can start with the make up (doing my own) which she does my sister's hair, and the other 2 can still be around us chatting and doing their own hair / make-up whilst we all drink bucks fizz ?

So, after all that waffle, how much would you expect to pay for 1 hairdresser to do a bridal trial before the wedding but in her own salon, plus bride and MOH hair at the bride's house on the wedding day. We'll both be having up-dos - I have no idea how long that would take (I'd guess 30 mins each based on what I can do myself).

Thank you!

I'm having mine done in Salon and it's £40 per up do. The trial cost the same which I though was cheeky but she did spend an hour on it and will do on the day. It's a great salon, I loved what she did and they aren't charging more then normal up do's cost. I hate when people just put things up for weddings!

Yowch - I know it's more 'effort' and probably products for an up do, but my hairdresser only charges £13 for a dry trim, which she always finishes (as she dampens in so blow dries it and puts shine stuff on) and takes 30 mins! She charges my OH £10 for his, which takes about 20 mins so I suppose her hourly rate is roughly £30 but I'm not sure if up dos will be more purely because of what it is ?

It totally depends on the Salon/stylist and equally what you want vs how long it will take to do. Working at a hair salon, I have this conversation on a weekly basis with b2b's. My advice is to just ask, they may have bridal packages which will give you 1 trial (if you dont like outcome, extra trials paid for seperately) and your hair on the day for one price, and theh on top, would charge you a spwcific rate for the moh's hair on the day only. (again, any trials paid for seperately).

At my salon, if you come in for both appointments, we would charge you, for example, £45 for a trial (say a french pleat), and then £55 on the day. MOH, BM, MOB etc would be charged on top. This would be for our lowest level stylist, so the rates go up for higher level stylists. We do also do hair outside of the salon, but that is more tricky to quote as each quote is dependent on several different criteria

I paid £35 for my trial and £35 again for on the day, plus £30 for each of the bridesmaids (3) to have their hair done too. The hairdresser was fantastic, she not only did our hair as asked but also helped out in curling my little nieces' hair (all 3 of them!) and just generally helped keep everything running smoothly on the morning by helping out on all sorts of little things. She arrived at 7.30am and stayed until I was leaving the house with my dad.

OH thought having a hairdresser come to the house was a bit of a luxury but in the end she turned out to be an absolute star and helped out in ways I wouldn't even have thought of. ?

I am having mine done by my salon but they are 1 hours drive from the venue. I am paying £40 for my trial and then £60 on the day but I also have to pay £120 for them to come to me but I think it will be worth it.

Thanks girls for the help - it seems to be a bit pot luck and no clear 'normal' price at all! I'm having my hair chopped this morning so I'll try and quiz her a bit more on prices for everything.

    Hiya

I'm a hairdresser myself and am lucky that 2 of my bridesmaids r hairdressers too.

What you've got to think of is it takes time (I normally give myself atleast an hour per hair up) because the style needs 2 stay in all day and the bride plus BM'S will b devastated if it was 2 start fallin out or coming loose throughout the day. Also try to remember that the hairstylist will be using a lot of pins, clips and also products to make sure it is secure so this is all included with the price. The hair is a 1 of the main focus points of the bride/BM'S which the hairdresser has 2 take into account when doing your hair so spends a lot more time and attention to detail which believe me often goes unnoticed. My advice is if your hairdresser offered to do it really cheap then ask yourself why. I used to charge 28 for a trial but my client would get to try 2 different styles for that and then obviously extra if they wanted additional trials. I would then charge 28 on the day per person but have recently just put my prices up to 35 as I didnt feel 28 was enough for the amount of time, effort and covering cost. Also you will notice that as soon as hairsalons hear you say BRIDE or hair up for my WEDDING they seem to wack the price right up considering it is the same effort they would put into a prom or hair up for another occasion. I would average no more then 50 each of you.

Hope this has been helpfull to you Smiley smile xxx

Thank you Donna, that's useful to know.

I spoke to my hairdresser today and she said she'd charge £70 per hour, which includes her travel to our house. She thinks it would probably take 1.5 hours to do both my MOH and myself which tops £100 so I'm not sure I can justify it even though it sounds fairly 'normal'. ? Especially as I assume I'll also have to pay a high hourly rate (I think she said £50 an hour) for a trial which could take an hour!

That does sound a lot when you look at it as paying hourly. On the day she could end up taking longer so she gets paid more (you obviously no your hairdresser more to know wether she would do this or not) but then you will have to make sure you have extra money on the day where as it would be much better n more piece of mind for yourself to know exactly what you will be paying on the day. have a look at hair salon websites which are local to you and contact them to see what they would charge. Most salons normally have a specific stylist or more who specialise in wedding hair up!

Thanks for your advice Donna - that was my concern too, I'd rather know exactly what I'll be paying. I phoned around a phew today, leaving one particular one out as they're amazing - gorgeously luxurious salon, loads of highly qualified and experienced stylists who've won tons of awards, and the salon itself has won best in our county so I figured I'd NEVER be able to afford them. Ended up calling them... and it's £32 for trial and another £32 on the day! I have to go to them rather than them come to me, but I've made a 9am appointment and my sister and I may go to a gorgeous cafe just nearby for breakfast first, and then both have our hair done at 9, leaving plenty of time back at home to get ready for a 1pm service.

I'm thrilled, and csn't wait for my trial!

Aww wow sounds brill Smiley smile see its always worth looking around!! my last bit of advice (which hardly any of my clients ever do and it makes things a lot harder for both hairdresser and client) is to find pictures of what u really like but quite a few different ones and they will recommend what will suit your hair and what is do-able. But mainly...if you can...take a pic of your dress if you have it as that makes a massive change to how to have your hair and will b a HUGE help to the stylist. The amount of times the bride has come in to me knowing exactly how they want their hair but when they c it with the dress they change there mind n a few have changed it on the actual day which works out stressful for both of us...hence a trial being a fab idea Smiley smile

Ooh thank you! My dress should be ready Jan / Feb, so when I go for fittings I'll make sure I get plenty of pics incl. a head and bodice shot. I'll need to flash on here anyway!

So far I've found about 12 photos of things I quite like and am very chilled about my hair (I'm always telling my hairdresser to do what she likes with it - "I'm bored, can you change it? I don't mind what to!" - quite happy to let the professionals decide what will suit me the most) so hopefully the stylist will be able to come up with something amazing!
