ham recipe?

pippin, 2 January, 2009 at 11:55 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Over Christmas alot of people in my house commented on how much they love ham. I always buy my ham pre cooked so now i would like to cook a ham from scratch. with maybe a honey glaze. Would anyone have any hints or tips? I know to soak the ham over night in water but that is about it!!

Thank you for replies x

No matter what bird/roast we have ham is always the favourite. I just do it the way my mum always did. Jamie's method is probably the closest to what i do

    Hope this helps

    Two, probably very dim, questions:

    - Are gammon and ham the same thing?

    - Do people eat ham as a meal - hot? I always think of ham being cold, either with salad and pickles or in a sandwich.

Thanks Mrs Jess, I have bad memories of gammon dinners as a child - remember it being dry and pretty salty!

I'm cooking gammon in Cherry Coke at the moment a la Nigella. It really is yummy! I tend to do mine in the slow cooker. Put the joint in cold water and bring to the boil and rinse off (gets rid of the salty flavour) then pop it into the slow cooker with an onion and cover with cherry coke. I'll leave it in for about 6 hours.

Oh, I wish it was dinner time already!

We did the Jamie recipe with marmalade this Christmas which was fab, i normally do a mustard and honey glaze. we slice the leftovers and freeze packages with a couple of slices in each, which are great for sandwiches and much cheaper than pre sliced supermarket ham.

I cooked a ham last night and I bake rather than boil (my H boils rather than bakes, so it's just a toss-up between which of us is cooking! ? ) I used Delia's recipe here.

I'm not sure there's much in it - it has been a while since H has cooked a ham, so wouldn't like to say for sure. Maybe you need to buy 2 hams and try one each way...?! ? However it's cooked, I'm sure it will be delicious!

I boil then bake, in theory keeps it moist then gives it a lovely coating through baking.
