Harrogate Recommendations

BONONE, 6 February, 2009 at 15:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

MrB and me thinking of going for the weekend as we have never been before. I have checked out Tripadvisor but was wondering if anybody had any personal experiences, ideally up to £100/night.

Also any things to do or eating out recommendations appreciated

We stayed here just before christmas and it was quite nice. They're in the process of renovating but we were not disturbed by builders whilst we were there. Food was very nice and really close to the centre of harrogate

I was there for a conference in December. We all stayed in the Yorkshire Hotel (I think it was £80 a night, but that might have been with a discount through my employer) but I wouldn't stay there again, it was freezing with drafty windows. Not good reports from the others that stayed there either.

Some others from our group stayed at the Swallow Hotel- St Georges who got their rooms for £50 a night, and there was a pool there! They said the hotel was good.

Both are bang in the centre of town.

Would recommend going to Betty's tearoom for afternoon tea- the waitresses dress in old fashioned outfits, and your loose leaf tea is served in individual teapots, and cakes are fab (not really cheap). We didn't have much time for much else when we were there.

We ate in a random Italian restaurant, and the Slug and Lettuce which were ok but not amazing, so afraid no food recommendations! Though Betty's does evening meals too.

I go there twice a year and i liked the cedar court more than any of the others

keep away from the crown its central but grubby

i liked the swan too but not as nice as cedar court

the night life so much fun i think more than the travel lodge is a waste of money as you only need somewwhere to sleep

forever yours put all their staff and reps up in the white lion i can never get a room there but been in the bar and it looks lovely

Avoid pinochios - it's an italian restraunt that used to be really good but had gone downhill in the past couple of years. Make sure you stock up on chocs and toffee at farrahs.

The Turkish Baths are beautiful and, of course, as someone has said there is always Betty's for a Fat Rascal!!

The quality of the Yorkshire Hotel rooms seems to vary from floor to floor. A large group of us stayed there last year and some rooms were lovely, others less so. Mine was very comfortable and nicely furnished but the communal areas on my floor were decidedly worn and in need of new carpets. The hotel also has possibly the tiniest lift in the world (the one nearest the bar, anyway). The food in the Hg1 brasserie was very nice.

Thanks everybody for both recommendations and places to avoid. MrB and me have decided we should start visiting places closer to home, neither of us have been to Harrogate and we've only visited Whitby for the first time last November, which is shamefull really as only live in Durham.

I do love Betty's fat rascals. One of my friends has been to Betty's cookery school and makes them
